Have you guys read about this?

Pop songstress Vanessa Carlton set out on her daily run along the streets of Shohola, a rural area about 20 miles outside of Milford.

Her father, Ed, has a home in the Walker Lake community. The neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks, so Carlton runs in the roadway.

About two blocks from her dad's house, Carlton passes a home with three dogs in the yard: A Pomeranian, a Jack Russell Terrier and a 9-month-old pit bull named Bella. The yard is surrounded by an invisible fence.

Bella bolts the yard and bites Carlton on the calf. The singer is bleeding from five puncture wounds, and retreats home.

Two days later after the May 2 attack, Vanessa and Ed Carlton go back to Bella's home and confront its owners, Ben and Jo Anne Teichberg.

"They are branding Bella as a dangerous animal and want her put to death," Ben Teichberg said. "They said because Bella is a pit bull, it is known to be bad."

The victim, Vanessa Carlton, is a 26-year-old singer-songwriter-pianist who spent three years touring with Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks. Carlton's been nominated for three Grammy awards and just released her third album, called "Heros and Thieves."

James Rickert, the dog warden for Wayne and Pike counties, put Bella under a 10-day home quarantine. The dog must be either confined or on a leash during that period.

The quarantine is a precaution against rabies, according to Ellen Howarth, region supervisor for dog law enforcement at the state Department of Agriculture. The Teichbergs must monitor Bella for changes in her health, behavior or attitude. At the end of the 10 days, Rickert will return for a health check. If Bella shows any signs of illness, she'll be sent to the family's vet for an exam.

During the quarantine, Rickert will also check Bella's license and rabies vaccination status. Only under rare circumstances — such as if a dog was found to be dangerous by a court and there was a subsequent attack — will a dog warden ever seize a dog. Even under those circumstances, euthanizing an animal is unusual.

Because there were no witnesses to the incident, it would be up Carlton to file a written statement and no such statement has been filed, Howarth said.

Meanwhile, Carlton continues to recover. She's been seen by a doctor, who is monitoring her for infection. She's also taking antibiotics, according to her father.

Carlton will be notified of the medical results regarding Bella's condition at the end of her 10-day confinement.

And after that, she might have to find another running route.

^Yep! It's kinda funny, actually, that instead of receiving upcoming album's news we receive this ¬¬

Well, I hope she's ok by now and that she gets 100% so she can finally put an end to our anxiety and release the so-awaited CD!

I think it's a fake..theres just too many errors....I laughed a bit while reading this lol..i would really like to say that not all pit-bulls are bad....it just depends on how they are raised...I've had 3 in my lifetime and none of them were ever rowdy crazy animals....

If I'm not mistaken, she's 29 years old, not 26, and I believe the album's title was "Heroes and Thieves", not "Heros".

Who's this guy's fact checker?

Hope she's alright, though.

How would the press even find out about this? Seems a little odd too me....unless Gwen did get mistaken for Vanessa which seems like it could happen..they do look a lot alike.

Pit bull accused of biting Vanessa Carlton wins reprieve
By HOWARD FRANK
Pocono Record Writer
July 08, 2010 - 12:00 AM

If the teeth don't fit, you must acquit.

That theme must have resonated Wednesday with a Shohola district judge, who ruled that a pit bull pup named Bella, accused of biting pop singer Vanessa Carlton, could move back with her owners provided they build a fence around their property.

Key to the animal's reprieve was testimony from a Saylorsburg vet, who said the bite wound on Carlton's leg didn't match a mold she took of Bella's teeth shortly after the incident.

It was a victory for the Teichberg family, who had Bella since she was 6 weeks old.

"I'm elated," Ben Teichberg said. "It's like you get news your child you haven't seen in umpteen years comes home."

Carlton was jogging past the Teichberg's Shohola home May 2 when she was bit by a dog she later identified as Bella. The pit bull was 9 months old at the time of the attack.

Carlton had just returned from England, and was visiting her parents' home nearby to visit her own dog. She was bit on the right calf, leaving her bloody and terrified, according to testimony presented in a summary trial at the Milford courthouse Wednesday.

Ben Teichberg was charged with three counts of dog law violations: failure to confine an animal, breaking a quarantine issued by the dog warden and harboring a dangerous dog. The final charge amounted to a capital offense, since the Teichberg's couldn't afford the insurance, registration and other costs required by the state when a dog is labeled dangerous.

The six-hour trial featured family members, a dog warden and witnesses with backgrounds in dog behavior and canine dentistry.

Carlton, composed and still, testified for an hour. She told of how she was jogging around Walker Lake, about 11 miles northwest of Milford, around noon, when she saw a barking dog charging her from about 50 to 75 feet away.

"I turned and tried to be submissive, and turned into the woods, backing up so it wouldn't be so angry," she said.

Carlton said as she was turning the dog bit her leg.

The prosecution showed enlarged photo of Carlton's wound, a gruesome set of skin punctures surrounded by bruised, discolored skin.

But Dr. Karin-Susan Breitlauch of Creature Comfort Veterinary Care in Saylorsburg testified that the dog that bit Carlton couldn't have been Bella.

Breitlauch, who was named Pennsylvania's Veterinarian of the Year in 2009, made a plaster mold from an impression she took of Bella's upper and lower teeth in May. Breitlauch compared the mold to the photos of Carlton's wound.

"These teeth cannot make that wound," she said.

Prosecutor David McKenzie tried to discredit Breitlauch's expertise in forensics. The vet pointed out her extensive background in canine orthodontics.

The prosecution also called a reluctant Gerald Boyd. The skinny, 16-year-old 10th-grader was visiting his girlfriend, Alexis Teichberg, on May 11. He said Bella bit him on the leg while Alexis' sisters were playing with the dog.

"They got (her) all wired up," he said. "She just bit for a second."

Bella was placed under a 10-day quarantine after the May 2 incident involving Carlton to make sure the dog wasn't sick with rabies.

Ben Teichberg, who didn't want to subject Bella to a life of restrictive confinement and couldn't afford to fight the charges, scheduled Bella to be euthanized May 14.

Instead, Teichberg signed over ownership of the dog to Maria McKenna on May 13. McKenna is a trainer and evaluator with Save the Orphaned Dogs, a nonprofit rescue and adoption organization in Pocono Pines.

That resulted in the charge against Teichberg of breaking quarantine.

McKenna, who has had Bella in her home for the past two months, testified she evaluated Bella and found her to be playful and even a little timid. "She's never shown any signs of aggression," she said.

District Justice Alan Cooper found Teichberg guilty of failure to confine his dog and assessed a $100 fine. He also found Bella's owner guilty of breaking quarantine, although the judge said it was probably unintended and reduced the fine from a maximum of $500 to $50.

On the charge of harboring a dangerous dog, Cooper played Solomon. He told Teichberg he could return Bella to the family home if they built a fence around their property within 90 days.

Carlton declined to comment and left the courtroom with her family through a back door, escorted by a sheriff's deputy.

It seems fishy to me too. Not that I wanted the dog to die or anything, but what are the chances that she got bit by a different dog that just happened to look exactly like these people's dog? Poor V  :-[

Yes, that's what I'm thinking too. Surely, there's no much dogs around that area who just look like that particular dog.

I noticed quite a few people tweeting about this. It annoys me so much that stuff likes that makes the press just because she's a singer, and people can spout really dumb, mean and uninformed shit. Of course someone wouldn't try to have a dog put down out of spite. Maybe she did identify the wrong dog, but she's only human. She was trying to do the right thing, the dog survived so let it go! I see the family have even set up a website selling "save Bella" t-shirts and other such crap. I bet they're loving milking this. It's only because she is a singer that this got any attention for them, yet feel the need to immaturely insult her and drag it out. Jees, ever heard of taking the high road...

"Oh, sorry Vanessa. You know that dog that bit you, who you brought back to its owner? Yeah, that wasn't Bella, even though the owner admitted it was Bella and put it in a freaking quarantine for 10 days, before scheduling it to be euthanized. No, it couldn't possibly because the bite wounds, which have already healed considerably, don't match her teeth. Also, the crazy dog lady that took her in says Bella's very timid but playful, which in itself is an oxymoron. She says that the dog doesn't seem like it would bite, possibly because it's so messed up from a 10-day quarantine to do anything but lie there in a doggy-style fetal position. Sorry, go find another dog."
