Title: X Factor star Cheryl Cole samples Vanessa Carlton.
Post by: Martin. on October 14, 2010, 03:35:38 am
On the closing track to her new album.

It's called "Waiting" and samples the song V is most known for.

I'm dreading this. Cheryl is awful.

Ya... Cheyrl is interesting..

I like her song Parachute, but Ingrid Michaelson's version is sooo much better.

She might be able to pull off a V sampling...maybe

It's not out yet.

And Cheryl's music is so bad to me. Just seeing the lyrics makes me want to puke.

But u heard it?

I don't like that type of music, and i relly don't care about her. Her singing is overrated imo. So if what u say its true, maybe i go from "i dont care" to "i loathe her", lol.

Nooo! Being from the UK, I am more than sick of seeing Cheryl Cole everywhere. She's a constant reminder of the general public's lack of taste and interest in talent. And now the worst has happened! It's like she's invading the one of the sacred areas I can still treasure as private and special, and dragging it into the generic mass-comsumption drivel. Okay maybe that's a tad overdramatic lol, but on the upside Cheryl does have a lot of fans so hopefully it will lead to a slight increase in downloads of ATM, and ergo payment/royalties to V. Cheers Chezza.

I'm pretty interested on hearing what it would sound like...

I haven't heard it, nope. Just seen a few articles mentioning the use of the song.

Cheryl being a judge on that show is hilarious to me because she cannot sing well at all. I know it's not all about singing, but when she's criticising contestants for being off-key, it's ridiculous. And she's currently involved in a huge controversy with the show for not putting through public favourite Gamu; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4wErSSfkok

But I digress. Her music is of no substance and I'm kinda mad she's using Vanessa's song. Grr.

I was almost mad too, but hey, we can't change it now. But there is no chance this can be a good song. Taking the ATM hook and trying to ft it into some RnB-lite brit-pop track? I can't see it working.
Also, good to see other Nessaholics from the UK :D

You can here a minute long clip of the song here guys, just click "waiting" (the last track). The ATM sample can be heard, but it's been sped up.

Bleh.

Heh I read that Ingrid wasn't happy about doing a cover over Parachute XD Her version is better but I could be bias I guess :P It's not really her style it seems... Ah well. I love Ingrid <3. And Nessa..and Sara Bareilles. Epic singers.

I agree. Epic and magical artists.

The first 30 seconds just sound like an impersonation of ATM. IDK. Just an opinion.

They will never get it.

I remember when V was on Duets, she'd mentioned that the piano rift was when the piano was singing and she wanted the chick to play it slowly and meaningfully.

This. What Miss Cole has done is just the entire opposite of that.

It's more Blech *Insert vomiting smiley*

I wonder what Nessa would think D: Hopefully she won't hear the song. Bleh.

Heh funny thing was, I was partly tired and it was kinda late last night when I went to bed but at first I thought we were talking about Sheryl Crow. My bad. It's funny how the brain reads things a certain way XD I never heard of Cheryl Cole tho D: I mostly only listen to singers that is similar to like Nessa or Ingrid, etc. :P

At least Cheryl hasn't done "Carousel" yet. If she did, I'd be very mad. LOL.

I think we're all being a little harsh here. Cheryl's music isn't supposed to be beautiful, deep or melodically moving; her genre is pop & dance hits, and this song fits that perfectly. True, she turned V's masterpiece into something less than spectacular, but if you listen to this with the idea of dancing to it in a club rather than being moved by the music, it's a fairly decent song and I would have a blast dancing to it.

Also, Ingrid wrote Parachute with the intention of someone else singing it, and she was extremely excited Cheryl was the one who picked it up. It gave her a lot of publicity and huge amounts of royalties in the UK. She only decided to sing it herself recently, and even her version has some auto-tune in it.

With that being said, I'm in no way saying that Cheryl is an amazing singer, but she is an artist with a genre very different than V or Ingrid's, and we should respect that. Her trying to do an acoustic version of ATM would be a totally different story though, but luckily, that's not the case here.

Tbh, i don't think that anyone's intention in this forum is to be disrespectful towards any artist. Everyone is just giving his honest opinion and others joke about it  :D

I have to say something else tho, just because a song is intended to be a dance song, pop hit or whatever, doesn't mean it can't be good in every way, or beautiful or melodically moving.

And btw, more than dancing, i see myself fist pumping to that song, lol!!

I agree with both of you, guys. We've got the freedom to express whatever we want to think. No one wants to be harsh on Cheryl. We just all want to express our thoughts.

And I agree that V and Cheryl are two far different artists. We just reacted this way because I guess we don't like what she had made out of the riff V is most famous for.

I'm .. going to cry. As a melodic song, this sucks. As a dance song, this is below average and the lyrics still suck.

If there was an emoticon to symbolize vomiting and then dying, I would use it.  As horrible as it was, I somehow tuned her singing out to only listen to the ATM riff. *sigh* And I still don't like how they arranged it.

Ok. I think we need to stop complaining. This song probably contributed (in maybe a really tiny little way) financially towards Rabbits on the Run.

I mean think of it this way. Cole buys the rights to butcher this song, Vanessa takes the money and hires someone to do up the main site.

Me: Gonna stop complaining.

Am just glad that I know who the original singer is and that this is just extra publicity for Vanessa. We could actually expect a poor soul (born a NESSAholic, but lost in Cole's music) drifting towards NESSAholicism because he/she decides to figure out where they've heard the rift before... And well the rest (as we all know) is NESSAholic history ;).

It's basically a win-win situation.

imo.
