Title: 06/22/11: Jammin Java - Vienna, VA (review)
Post by: B on June 22, 2011, 05:25:33 pm
Ah, how I've missed the concert call.  8)

Sounds like the NESSAholics in attendance are having a good time. So far I've heard

Dear California
A Thousand Miles
Fairweather Friend
I Don't Wanna Be A Bride
White Houses
Nolita Fairytale
Half A Week Before The Winter
London

I'm sure there are some I missed prior to Dear California, but the crew at the show can update you on those.  ;)

Gosh, her setlists are so boring. It's the same songs (minus the ones from this record) everytime. What about "Twilight" or "Afterglow" or SOMETHING different, Ness?

I'm glad you enjoyed the show though and had a good experience! Well done for all the Nessaholics who showed up, too.

The show was great! It was nice to meet a few of you, and put some faces to the names :-) I loved "Fools Like Me" on the rhodes, but I think Marching Line might be my new favorite song by her. She seemed pretty nervous, but sounded great and told some fun stories about a few of the songs. I'm sure she'll only get better with the rest of the tour!

Martin, I wish she would play some older songs too. Not that there's anything wrong with the ones she's been playing, but maybe, you know, she could slip an older one is instead of A Thousand Miles.  :-\

It would be nice to have more variety.  I wonder though, if it's been SO long since she has played many of them and that's why she sticks to the ones she has played the most.  Also, like she said, she will be playing ATM for the rest of her career becuase it gave her the "property" to build everything else on.  With that said, I really hope she doesn't play it both nights in NYC and I hope the set lists are different for those of us who are going to both (well, all three actually, though I'm not going to the third).

I hope you all had fun and thank you for sharing the info. Hope to hear more from Ghisy and Kulp tomorrow!

I think that it's her way to give back to the song. It did made her where she is now. But I don't actually hearing it very often now, since she has changed so much in singing the song that it sounds a little too far from the studio version. I love the softness and wise approach she does now.

And I don't think that she'd play older songs as of the moment. She wants to build up for Rabbits, so she's doing most Rabbits song. But maybe later in her tour?

But seriously, I don't expect her now to play her old dark songs. For some reason, I don't think she won't. At least, soon.

She could replace some of the current songs with different ones then. I put up with it during H&T, but it'll be boring if it's the same songs again for this record. It just irks me. A little variety wouldn't hurt. Especially since she knows she has fans who will see her shows everytime.

I don't mind hearing it either because I haven't listened to it in so long, and I too like the way she is singing it now (ala sunset sessions).
I am kind of kicking myself for listening to the new songs so much because...it's not that I'm sick of them by any means but they are loosing their "newness" and it leaves me wanting more more more!  Also because of this I wish she would play other songs off the album at these upcoming concerts because we've heard the same 5 for awhile..

Great show first show I've been to in a shopping center LOL but that wasn't a bad thing. For those of us who arrived at 6pm or before and were near the door we got to hear some of her sound check while the door was getting new lettering.Small venue seats about 200 they had it set up like a standard concert venue.I was lucky enough to wind up  second row center not bad and a good reason for leaving the house at 4:30 LOL. Didn't see any vinyl records that were spoke of but there were signed posters numbered to I scored one of those. Vanessa started a little late most shows start 15 minutes after anyway she opened with Hands on Me she played A Thousand Miles on her Rhodes keyboard (yeah the squeaky pedal thing no squeekin tonight LOL) Nolita Fairytail as well a couple of cute moments one what she lost her place after starting a song and said is anybody you-tubing this!Another one she had googled her own lyrics and printed them. not criticizing her she said she was rusty(hear we go those squeak again hey no squeak) it was nice to meet a few of you last night once again great show

So fantastic to see V again. The show was filled with a wide range of people. Old and young which is funny to me cause they were like 7 or 8 when she first started. The audience was wonderfully quiet and loved her. It was she and Ari. She played a lot of songs on the Rhodes which was different and cool. She also slowed them down.

They said no photography, audio recording or video and they were enforcing it.

Vanessa came out and made sure to say hi, take pictures etc. to for everyone who wanted them. It did take a really long time so you know and or plan to do it in the future.

Not sure the order but it was pretty close to this:

Hands on Me
Who's To Say
Carousel
Tall Tales For Spring
Fools Like Me
Get Good
Dear California
A Thousand Miles
Fairweather Friend
I Don't Want To Be A Bride
White Houses
Nolita Fairytale
Half A Week Before The Winter
London
*********
Marching Line

Let us know what kind of merchandise they had at the show besides the Vinyl.

As stated before there were some posters, limited number of them and signed but we all are confused because unless she has changed her signature it's not hers. I may have to get something signed just to test it out. Ha .

There was no other merch at that show. Will keep you posted.

As long as you didn't take out your camera during the show, they were ok right? The shows I plan to go to, I plan to take my camera with me just in case I can snag a photo with her. I have no plans to record the shows. I just want to make sure my camera doesn't get confiscated before a show.

I don't want to post my videos, they are not up to my standards. We were in the back (it was way too hot for me to be waiting in line ass early and it's not that serious) and it was so dark but I know you all want to hear/see. Maybe someone else has better but for now this is what we have.

Kulpy and I are proud to present you the setlist that includes songs played on the Rhodes (Rhodes is *) (thanks Let for the setlist!)

Hands on Me
Who's To Say
Carousel
Tall Tales For Spring* (end)
Fools Like Me*
Dear California*
A Thousand Miles*
Get Good
Fairweather Friend
I Don't Want To Be A Bride
White Houses
Nolita Fairytale*
Half A Week Before The Winter (Vanessa only)
London
Encore: The Marching Line

-------------------------

Kulpy recorded the whole audio, it sounds ok but could be better!

Just a few words about the show, she did mess a little bit BUT it was amazing to see her again after so long! Had a nice chat with her after the show, she hung around for a while, taking pics with everyone and signing stuff. Kulpy and I will try to post a proper review when we have more time! <3 her!!!

edit: here's Kulpy's pic of the aforementioned poster! And let me tell you: the picture doesn't do it justice, it's AMAZING!

It's a little bit more difficult to be discrete with a smartphone than it is a camera since you can turn off the back display, but yeah I doubt they'd take your phone. I actually meant House of Blues in Chicago did patdowns, but Park West always has security roaming and looking for cameras.

To be honest the only reason I would bring a camera is on the off chance of actually getting to meet her, though suppose you could take a photo with your smartphone.

Hey, I think I was sitting next to you! I was the red head :)
I got there pretty early about six so I got pretty good seats. Second row in the middle and the stage was very close. I say this after every V show I attend, but that was the best show and the best that V has ever sounded. She was adorable and funny. I loved hearing Fools Like Me on the Rhodes. It was so soft and pretty and I was fighting back tears, as I was for most of the show. I was so happy that she ended the show with "Marching Line" too. Mostly the crowd was very well behaved and no talked during her playing. Some dude in the back towards the end of the show kept shouting "Play Marching Line!" and when she went this is my last song and it's called "London" the guy went "UGHH!" really loud. She laughed and said something like, "You know I usually come out and do an encore so just be patient. By the way, the encores are never real. It's never because you clap, we planned on coming back out anyway" LOL. Also it was cute when she forgot the lyrics to "Get Good" and someone called out the lyrics to her.
I got a signed poster too. Mine was number 7. I also got a set list from Mark after the show. I really wanted to stay so badly after to meet her again but I had a hungry husband on my hands so I had to go. I get two more chances in NY next week! Just out of curiosity, did she come back out in the club or outside?

The posters were $25.

They had a small stack at this show but I'm betting they just have a certain amount they bring out at every show.

Just out of curiosity, did she come back out in the club or outside?
She did, she was inside taking pics and stuff. She did stay a while too.

What if that circle on the poster is the way that the cd (or better yet, the vinyl) would turn out?

Imagine a star map c.d. SO cool.

I don't that they expected so much patronage from people.

To be honest, they only sold out last night in Philly. So it might not be the case everywhere. :)

@Byoungforever, it took at least an hour for her to come back. I'm not sure but we definitely waited for a while.

I don't have the time to wait... well... in a way i don't. I don't know. Like an hour and a half is too long. I would wait half an hour... but more than an hour? ugh....

I don't want to post my videos, they are not up to my standards. We were in the back (it was way too hot for me to be waiting in line ass early and it's not that serious) and it was so dark but I know you all want to hear/see. Maybe someone else has better but for now this is what we have.

OMG thank you for the videos! marching line :')

Great show, was my first time ever at a VC concert!  She's my absolute favorite singer, so finally seeing her was amazing!  I found this site afterwards and glad that I have :)  I've become more and more a Nessaholic the past few years, don't know why I didn't look for something like this sooner!  Thanks to everyone who posted videos at this show and others, I've enjoyed viewing them :)
