Multiplatinum recording star Vanessa Carlton is getting critical acclaim for a record she collaborated on with Stephan Jenkins of Third Eye Blind, her former boyfriend. That sounds like a bittersweet victory, but she insists it's not like that.

"We're still friends and so very proud of this record because it's our child," says Carlton of her new Heroes and Thieves album. "I think this record was the whole reason we were together in the first place. In some ways, it was like the music was always most important, and in the end, that's probably why we evolved into being friends."

The singer/songwriter/pianist says The Inc./Universal Motown Records' release is her most introspective work yet.

"I'm 27 now, and the past year for me has brought up a lot of questions that come from evolving into a real woman, and the theme of the album is deciphering the heroes from the thieves in a very black-and-white way: What kind of life do I want to lead and carve out for myself? What kind of characters do I want to surround myself with?"

She adds, "I call my songs chapters, and the last chapter, More than This, talks about: What if we could declare right now that I don't need any more than I have - the person sitting next to me, the shoes on my feet, my dog, my career? If I just kind of declare that, in theory, I would experience this bliss. . . . Every song on the album involves those kinds of things."

Carlton just headed out on a limited four-week promo tour. She plans to "shoot the video for the second single Hands on Me in December, then next year, I'll take the band out and do a bigger tour."

I am not sure if some one you know who she is, she was the lead singer of "Nightwish" but for some reasons she isn't anymore, she's got a new single called 'I Walk Alone' which I one of my favorite songs.

Polls / The One (With or without Steve)

Some people are upset about how Stevie's voice sounds in "The One", so I thought I would make a poll about it, so, WITH or WITHOUT Steve.  I'd vote for 'With Her' cause it wouldn't be the same without her

Three Grammy nominations, third studio album... the symbolic third time may well be charming for Vanessa Carlton, whose forthcoming Heroes and Thieves (The Inc. Records) showcases the maturing talents of the 26-year-old singer/songwriter/pianist. Calling it “the best batch of songs I’ve ever written,” she brings them brilliantly to life with a star team of co-producers – Irv Gotti, Stephan Jenkins and Linda Perry. The result is a standout collection for an artist who first exploded onto the scene in 2002 with her stunning debut Be Not Nobody and its hit singles “A Thousand Miles” and “Ordinary Day.”

“It might be my first thematic record,” Carlton says, adding that the songs reveal themselves like chapters in a book, one that fans can crack open with its release on October 9. Paying homage to the area of Manhattan where most of its songs were written, the first single is appropriately dubbed “Nolita Fairytale,” a syncopated, upbeat piece that paints a dramatic musical landscape. “That song is really about finding joy in unexpected environments. How sometimes losing things makes you realize what you have, which is like a quasi fairytale,” says Carlton.

Heroes and Thieves, reflects Vanessa Carlton’s renewed confidence as well as a continuation of her uncompromising approach to recording. There are soaring songs like “More Than This,” the pensive “Hands On Me,” the aching break-up song “My Best” and the alluring ballad “Home,” whose stripped-down sound places her sultry voice front and center.

Heroes and Thieves was recorded in the San Francisco studio of Third Eye Blind founder Stephan Jenkins and the Los Angeles studio of producer/songwriter Linda Perry. Carlton also put together an A-list of players including Matt Chamberlain, Louis Conti, Sebastian Steinberg and Abe Laboriel. Most of the songs were written on Carlton’s piano in her apartment in New York, which may account for the album’s discernible sense of terrior. A sense of immersion also guides this creative effort. “I was surrounded by a beautiful team of musicians that allowed these songs to breathe and grow organically,” she says. “All of my favorite albums had a way of bringing you into the music, where you’re listening in on a performance that is genuine. I think we achieved that because we were all loving the music and not just going through the motions.”

While she did not contribute her writing chops to Heroes and Thieves, the album felt an impact in more ways than one from legendary singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks, with whom Vanessa Carlton toured in 2005, 2006 and 2007. On the road, the friendship and support of Nicks came at a crucial time for Carlton, when she had nearly lost her faith in music. “She really did change my life,” says Carlton. “I found my mentor.” Nicks also contributes magical background vocals on “The One.” Hip-hop producer/entrepreneur Irv Gotti played an equally strong role in Carlton’s unlikely leap to The Inc. Records, becoming his first new signing since inking a deal with Universal Motown Records. Although he and Carlton seemed cut from vastly different cloth – in light of his legendary string of urban successes for Ashanti, Ja Rule, DMX, Jay Z and others – the union proved solid. “He was so positive and spontaneous,” says Carlton. “I began to realize we were alike in a lot of ways. Along with his rare passion and vision, he has a finely tuned ear which made me believe he could guide any type of musical project.”

Vanessa Carlton first began playing the piano as a toddler, continuing on an artistic road with her attendance at the School of American Ballet in New York, a path she would eventually abandon in favor of songwriting. She re-embraced the piano and began performing in bars and clubs across Manhattan. While studying at Columbia University, Carlton was signed to Interscope Records, but made her formal debut on A&M under veteran producer Ron Fair.

Her debut album in April 2002, Be Not Nobody, resonated with audiences of all ages, especially the hit piano single “A Thousand Miles,” which reached the Top 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart. Carlton went on to earn 2003 Grammy nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist (“A Thousand Miles”). Her second album Harmonium, which yielded the single “White Houses,” continued to inspire an increasingly loyal fan base and garnered some the best reviews of her career.

What Vanessa Carlton has learned during the past five years is clearly the fodder that makes up the most compelling components of Heroes and Thieves, a thematic album best listened to in its entirety, despite the cafeteria habits of the iTunes generation. “People tell me my songs are a little weird or unconventional, but in a good way and I like that,” says Vanessa Carlton. “I really wanted this album to be the one you want to wake up to on a Sunday morning and listen to over and over.”
