tell her that my chemical romance took advantage of "pop/punk/emo" being all the rage, and that any band (while i do like mcr) that can (and should) be in the same sentence as fall out boy, should not have fans trying to knock other artists' fans for liking someone who essentially kicked off the singer/songwriter genre, and who does not sound like anyone else in the mainstream.

yup definitely! Vanessa's works are unique in a way and obviously hard to catogerize them as "taking the easy way out". Her ideas came from hardwork for years, not just instant sparks in a mind for no good reasons. Just compare her lyrics with others who are "really in" right now.
