"It's been four years since Vanessa's last album, and it's clear that the 30-year-old pop singer has matured musically. She may have started out as a piano-playing phenom with her 2002 debut single, "A Thousand Miles," but on Rabbits on the Run, her songwriting skills have caught up with her musical talent.
OFF AND RUNNING: The disc starts off strong, with Vanessa's signature soulful sound on the catchy "Carousel" and the melodically defiant and personal "I Don't Want to Be a Bride," where she sings, "You can take me on a cheap vacation/I don't want to have expectations." Her slower ballads, "Fairweather Friend" and "London," feel a bit flat, but she comes back strong with the beat-heavy and faster-paced "Tall Tales for Spring."
