It's obvious some of it is tongue-in-cheek, but I believe there is a larger marketing scheme. I read somewhere awhile ago that Jewel wanted to reinvent herself a bit because apparently a lot of people thought she was older than she actually is...
So the thing I think about the album, is:
1) in some ways she is creating "lighter" music that is easy on the ears and fun to dance to and blah, blah, and this hip new image that the TRL crowd will dig, but at the same time
2) those who are older will realize what she is doing is poking fun at pop music and our society today, etc., etc, and think she's "cool" for doing so
So essentially if things go according to their plans, the younger audience (fans of Branch, Carlton, etc) will be able to relate to her music and dig her because she writes her own stuff, looks cool, has a good voice, etc. AND the older people might dig it because she's poking fun at some things...
I personally haven't really dug the last few Jewel albums, and I'm definitely not buying this one because I'm broke and I heard clips from the new album and didn't even like 1 of them. The "Intuition" video is pretty funny, though
