ok i am not racist...but is it just me or does affirmative action just seem wrong and another way of racism?

Shouldn't grades be the issue?

I mean if you didn't make the grades then why should you be *accepted. when someone else got better grades?

Racism?  Close.

Wrong?  Definately.

Even the Supreme Court laid the framework to strike it down in the Michigan Law School opinion when they said they said something to the extent of that they expect that one day that there will be no need for it.

The upholding of the Law School's A.A. entrance policy and the striking down of the undergrad's A.A. entrance policy was sheer brilliant thinking.  I think they got it right myself.

I think you mean ACCEPTED and not EXCEPTED.

I'm a little out of touch with affirmative action these days.  I know how it applies to job hiring and what not, but does it apply to college application acceptance as well?  Are colleges given a quota of minorities they must accept?

I can't keep up with politics, although I can debate you about religion.

Our English teacher told us all about this and it seems quite strange. And like Limey said, racism in reverse. I don't know, i understand how hard it is to combat such a turbulent history but if i was a black student i would feel as if i was just getting a place at uni because of my skin colour and not because of my own merit.

A similar thing happens here where universities have been told to take more state school pupils in so people are moving from private school to state school just to get into good universities, state school students feel like they have only got into Oxford because they didn't pay for education.

i dunno. i think there are exceptions, like someone who was raised in the slums w/ a not so great public shool experience should be given a shot at affirimative action.

while, a kid who grew up with an average to great compulsory education, and have parents with decent paying jobs shoud get no help.

this goes for all races.

People and organizations should encourage diversity because its an ADVANTAGE not because the law tells them too.  Poor kids should make it to good colleges because of merit, not because the law tells colleges to let them in.  Minorities should get good jobs because having a racially diverse work force is an ASSET to a company, not because the law tells them to.

I disagree with any law that forces a company/person/organization to do something that is not in their own best interest.  If it's the right thing to do, then it WILL BE in the companies best interest to do it.

Make sense?
