Heres a key though, Si.  Popup blockers just fix the SYMPTOM.  They stop the popups from occuring.  They don't remove the ROOT of the problem, which is the spyware sitting on your PC.  Get Adaware.

Hi,

by far the best pop-up blocker/cookie stopper/web page controller is proxomitron, which is free and downloadable from... erm... somewhere on the web. Use google.

adaware is frowned upon by the anti-spyware community now (or at least it was last time I checked). I forget the details, but again I'm sure you'll find something about it on google.

oh, I should add that proxomitron is for only for web page pop-ups etc., and not for any crappy spyware that you've got installed on your computer. You do need something like adaware to deal with that kind of problem.

I dont know anyone in the professional DEV commuinity that frowns on Adaware.  Personally, I like SpyBot Search and Destory better.  BUt they both work.

My solution: use Mozilla.

Oh yeah... don't download useless free schtuff (e.g. Date Manager) ...

....or run alternative OS's instead.

But I guess it's ok now, as they do link to it.

Yeah, I was having trouble with those too. I DL'ed the ad-aware program and ran it, and it found a bunch of stuff and I told it to get rid of 'em, so we will see how it does *shrug*

That would be a funny line... if it weren't for the fact that I said "I dont know anyone in the professional DEV commuinity that frowns on Adaware.".  Which technically could mean that I don't know anyone in the DEV community OR it could mean that i've never asked ANYONE their opinion on the subject

In this case what this actually means is that i've had adaware recomended to me by several IT professionals, developers, websites and tech TV.  And we all know Tech TV is not to be questioned.

Hence the "" on both of those statements. The best way to avoid malware in general is to be careful about what you put on your computer. Actually though, Mozilla has a kickass popup blocker built in. If you have no malware installed, that is what I would recommend to block popups that are just of the normal web variety.

If you have a fast computer, then Mozilla general is great. If you have ghetto hardware like your's truly, use Firebird or whatever it is called this week.

I only use IE when some braindead webdev forces it on me with Microsoft's proprietary web "standards." I have a link for all you people using IE......

EDIT: To be fair, here is one that crashes Mozilla based browsers, as well as IE. You KHTML people have no such exploit, that I know of at least.
