I don't think you know the bloody half of it! One of the NESSAholics (who shall not be named!) was complaining about doing a 500 word essay-to coin an american phrase, CRY ME A RIVER!

At my last school we were expected to do a minimum of 1000 words for each essay. For geography i had to solely devise a 3000 word piece of coursework with data collection methods, statistical analysis and uuuuugh evaluation. Now i have to do a 3000 word essay on evolution and the bible and at the end of each topic in Philosophy we are expected to do a (at the least)5 page essay. At my school now we are expected to do 16 hours of homework every week as a minimum, 4 hours for each subject we take. ARGH! And you thought you had it tough!? hee hee

Yes.

500 words?  Wow, that's nothing.

My friend's dissertation for History was only 217.

No, not words... pages (single spaced).

The only homework I ever do is for English or History. That's 'cause those are the only ones I understand. :) Oh, also . . . I never write the expected amount of words on an essay/paper. It's too much.  8O

Oh my God, you know what? I'm so bad in Math, it's terrible. The only things I know how to do are the fractions 'cause I can use pie charts. :D I swear, I don't even know how to use a damn calculator. (Which - I've never understood how using a calculator helps you to bcome better at Math.) It's all much too confusing. I always end up drawing pictures on my scrap paper. So, I never do homework in Math. Science, too. And Vocabulary.

In my opinion, i don't really count those as essays at all- 250 words is less than half a page! But i guess they have to be called essays, because what would they be called otherwise? lol, oh and you get LOADS!

A dissertation is the piece of work you do at University that goes towards your final result (i don't know how you grade degrees there?). It is one HUGE piece of work that researches an area to do with your subject that often has never been studied before. You get years to do it usually. They are usually at least 10,000 words long.

a lot of colleges also call it your "thesis paper". i think my sister started hers when she was a freshman in college, but i'm not sure....

Rosie - the dissertation is for undergrad school. that's where you get your Bachelors degree (i'm pretty sure at least, but someone correct me if i'm wrong).

His dissertation was for his doctorate--not his undergrad.

He started the actual research his sophomore year in college... took him quite a few years to complete.

Admittedly, I've never read it--never will.

The way we work things in good ole California at good ole CSUS:

1) 3 hours of homework/outside classwork for every UNIT you take.  I'm taking 15 units, I'm expected to be doing at least 45 hours a WEEK of homework/outside classwork so everyone else can STFU cause I actually NEED to spend that much time a week on homework.  Not counting the fact that I also need to work.

2) We get a bachelors degree once we complete the necessary requirements (of which there are a crap load which the university is not fully aware of how to implement...besides the fact that there are budget cuts so the enrollment in most classes has been cut sometimes in half meaning people can't get their classes meaning it takes forever to graduate).

3) A Masters Thesis is required to obtain a Masters degree.  This is a VERY long paper based on an original idea and research and must be approved by a Masters committee (consisting of school faculty) befor you are given a dgree.

4) A dissertation is required of those wishing to obtain a Phd.  This is generally an EXPANSION on the aforementioned Masters Thesis.  A Phd will not be given unless the dissertation is approved by another faculty committee.

Once I finish steps 1-4, I'll be a happy camper...until then...*dies*
I think you underestimate the level of my sneakiness

I think she just gave a pretty damn good explanation of what a dissertation is.  I don't know if Kyle's (my friend) dissertation was an expansion of a "Masters Thesis" or not--but I do know he had to have it approved by some kind of committee.

Wow!

If I ever make it through high school. College is going to be a pain.

217 pages still seems insane! Atleast they give ya time, I was thinking it was like a 2 month assignment  :?

Tricia- you have SO much work to do! Its weird because when my dad was at Oxford he only studied for about 2 days a week. He had one essay a week, whereas others had 2 a week (not fun!).
