An Interview With Vanessa Carlton
________________________________________

...Hot piano chick
It's not really who I am.

[Never thought it'd hurt so bad...]

Well I was funny, I was always known as "the dancer who could play"
It just never stopped, even once I started really intensely studying ballet.

I was really planning on being a ballet dancer.
I mean, music was something that I did in private.
Then when I went away to ballet school
And it proved not to be what i thought in terms of
A place where I could grow artistically, and kind of flourish
So, I started skipping my dance classes to write songs.

[When she looks in your eyes
And she wants what is hers, before the light.]

I am classically trained, and I have kind of that shape in my hands
And melodically it ended up completely influencing my writing because
That's all I would play.

[When you get your bloody dose
In the still of the night, it is there you'll feel it...]

My music is pop music,
But because its popular
I think there are qualities to the first album that are very
'Avant-garde' in comparison to what's going on.

And the media really kinda dumbs down who you are
And tries to get you to fit into one sentence and one headline and
That's it, that's how you're known and it doesn't really define me.

Like I'm constantly being put into that little pop singer mold
And it, and It's ---
God, I just can't wait to break out of it.

You know and this was such an opportunity for me
Because it's, it's this dark kinda violent, unexpected, and rebellious ---
Either they know that there's a dark side to what I do,
Or they're expecting a departure from what I do.
And, and really what it is, is opposed to this being some big
Departure from what Vanessa Carlton does and
The way she writes and all that stuff,
It's just a very, very comfortable part of the way I write.

I like to write dark songs, and the name for this song is 'dark carnival'
It's kind of a carnival for all ages and not just,
It's not about cotton candy anymore
There's guns, and there's cars, and there's terrorists and all that stuff.

The basis of this song is this carnival
This is kind of where this song takes place.
And then there is a female introduced in SpyHunter 2
The song is focused on the woman in the game.
It's kind of a warning to the criminals that she's chasing
And its also a depiction of where they are, which is this dark carnival
And its also, it kind of touches on her feelings
While she's doing this.

[And she runs on her own, and you'll hurt before you know
Not a sweet alibi when you get your...]

You know for SpyHunter, I can, I don't have to pretend to be someone else
When I'm writing it, I can be me writing a song which is gonna be dark
But its gonna be "Vanessa dark".

[Carnival, where the end is close
Tell me it wont hurt
Never thought it'd hurt so bad
Tell me it wont hurt
I just wanted to love you
I just wanted to love you
I just wanted to love you...]

I loved that interview! It's cooler to see it than it is to read it. She looks really good in it.
