My question of the day...?
« on: April 24, 2004, 09:43:48 am »
Ok question of the day...I have been asking tons and tons of people this question....

If you are born in say Canada and live in Canada and your parents where born and raised in say Israel what are you? Canadian or Israeli?

That's just an example...you can change both places for anything else....

I would say where ever you're born is what you are! Cause that's where you get your citizenship. So I think that person would be Canadian, with a Israeli heritage!
Just like I'm American, with an English, Norweigen, German, Polish and Czechoslovakian heritage!

That's what I thought too....

Last night I was talking to my Aunt who lives in Canada and she put her neighbor on the phone because she wants to hook us up. We end up talking for an hour arguing over this thing. He asked what I was and I like American and he was like I'm Greek and I'm like where were you born? And he was like Canada so I was like ohhh you're Canadian then...and he was like no I'm Greek and we went back and forth for an hour about this...I was like you are where you were born and he was like no you are where you were born and now I'm confused...:S

Wherever you're born, but if you're born in a different country and you move to the US, you have to decide at a certain age which you want to be a citizen of.  Atleast thats what my govt teacher said, maybe I misunderstood. Anyone know?

You are both.  One is your nationality and the other is your heritage.

If you are born in another country and your parents are from that country and you move to America, then you're a citizen of that country.  If you decide to become a citizen of America you have to go through a 5 year process. (3 years if you marry an American citizen, but you have to have been married for two years to prove that you're not married just for citizenship...so, in the end, they're both 5 year processes.)

If your parents are living in another country but are living in another country and you're born, then you can get a dual citizenship.  I think that is up to your parents.  I learned all this a year and a half ago, so this may be a little sketchy.

but Puerto Rico is technically part of the US isnt it? So wouldnt that mean you're a US citizen either way? I have a friend who was born in Puerto Rico and moved here when she was 7, but she's been a US citizen all the time.

Well I think you'd be Canadian, since it's where you were born that counts.
However, if both your parents were born in Israel and lived there prior to your birth, you may ask for an Israel citizenship I think (that's how it works for America, not sure about other countries).
Hehe, I've done my homework as you can see. ;)

Well its weird- because it depends on where your parents live too. Like my dad was born in Trieste- which was a United Nations Free City at the time (its now part of Italy), but both of his parents are English. So he's English. But the man at the airport said he could claim Italian citizenship because his passport says his birthplace was Italy. ARGH its all so complicated! Why don't you just say what you feel you are? Or where you've lived for the majority of your lifetime?
