If I'm not incorrect MASH was originally written to give awareness of the Korean War. Those medics were in the middle of the war, and every now and then you would see them bracing for thousands of injured soldiers who were coming in. The humour I believe was meant to be a contrast to that and a way they dealt with the stress they were under. Away from their wives, their country, and the culture they were brought up in. The Humour started to take over the show, as the people in the show and running it admitted, which is why they felt it should be concluded --the show lasted longer than the war.
Even those people were sensible.
The talk shows kind of hide behind the vail of showing the truth or what people don't want to see which should be dealt with socailly, and also works as a socially liberal outlet, which balances conservative views. But when does the entertainment aspect of those shows greatly outstrip any of those things, and have any other worth than just an entertainment show?
