Diversions' Music Picks
Must-see shows in Savannah and the Lowcountry for Nov. 4-10

John Stoehr
Savannah Morning News

Vanessa Carlton, with Christopher Jak
Not to be confused with another brown-haired paino-playing singer-songwriter by the name of Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton was raised in a small town in Pennsylvania by a mother who exposed her to everything from Debussy to Pink Floyd. Her debut album, "Be Not Nobody," featured the mega-hits "A Thousand Miles" and "Ordinary Day." Tonight's concert is part of her nationwide tour to plug her new album, "Harmonium," slated for release on Tuesday. For the record, we think "White Houses" is the best song on the album. But a lot of the record is kinda annoying. Carlton's the real deal. She's no Ashlee Simpson. She can really sing. But her preference for the breathy baby-doll voice suggests she'll fall into the same trap Jewel did. That whole I'm-vulnerable-please-protect-me act might work on some unsuspecting teenage boys, but eventually all waifs grow up. If Carlton would take the time to sing seriously, she'd really soar. 8 p.m. Friday, $25-$15, Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St., 525-5050, trustreestheater.com

--------

I don't know about all that, but whatever - see you at the show.

I actually sorta agree with it.  Harmonium doesn't come close to BNN in my mind.  Seems like she did kinda fall into the Jewel crap...

I still love the music, but it's more for the piano playing than the lyrics and vocals.  While BNN had great music, great lyrics, and great vocals Harmonium only has one of the three.

I'm on a mission to piss the world off.  Is it your turn yet?!

are you kidding? I think Harmonium has much, much better vocals-like 10 times better.

I'm not sure yet, but so far I still prefer to listen to her first album.  Maybe I still need time to get used to the new album.  We'll see.......she just seems a bit more frail on Harmonuim.  Usually once you have been exposed to what she has been in the industry either you toughen up or revert back to needing shelter from others.
