Piano People (question)
« on: September 11, 2004, 07:11:48 am »
Composers:
How exactly do you go about writing music on piano? Do you follow a particular method? I play piano and guitar but it's really difficult for me to pull melodies and such out of my butt, and I was wondering if anyone had some *concrete* (ie not vague) advice for how to go about doing so...
Nessa has seriously inspired me like crazy, I've always wanted to be a musician but didn't care about piano til I got into her, and when I play her stuff and watch her play it's just so amazing and I want to WRITE something... But I've played guitar for five years and I can't do much writing on that, even! I guess I just don't know much about how to... *rambling* any help??

Well here is how I got about it

Come up with some
chord progression
then make a melody to go with it
replace the melody with lyrics and vocals
I would then change the chord progression
from basic chords to something more fancy.

um, usually radom melodies pop into my head and i run to the piano to write them out and they turn out pretty good ( you add on to them, then strings, etc.)

i wish i could post some of my stuff on here but i have nothing to host the songs on

also helps if you have a good ear. because then you can transpose what's in your head to your instrument. that's the hardest thing about composing. putting what's in your head, through a musical instrument

for me it's kinda like for Amanda...I get some melodies stuck in my head for weeks then I go to the piano and play them.
Or I just slip my fingers trough some interesting notes, and then as soon as my ear picks that up , I try making a full melody, I won't deny that having musical theory knowledge helps A LOT, because after u absorb the theory , the rest flows by intuition.just play with the piano, don't be scared of hitting wrong notes , cuz that will make you find interesting things out on your own ;)

Try choosing one scale and then it's relative minor, for instance, and pick  5 or 6 chords from them and make a song, that's a good exercise for starting. But if you are completly clueless , I think picking up a book about harmony, scales and chords and all that will help you a lot =)

Thanks!!
I'm going to take Music Theory next quarter. My high school was really small and didn't offer a big variety of classes, so I never got an opportunity to take it.

my way is kind of odd and not very stable, but half the time i end up walking by the piano and i just hit some keys.. (i still dont really know why i do that) and it ends up sounding cool
so i stand by the piano and my hands just kinda move around.. and then i write it down and later i go and improvise it...

otherwise, i'll be playing a piece im trying to learn, and my ADD kicks in and i end up just playing nothing in particular and it turns into something i like, and then i write it down =)
