Sad news about Harmonium sales
« on: November 15, 2004, 01:39:28 pm »
Hi, I haven't posted much here before but I am a huge Vanessa fan. I just checked the "building album sales chart" on hitsdailydouble.com and after 26% of the sales counted so far, Vanessa has only sold about 8,000 copies. That means, you can expect the total sales for the week to only be somewhere around 30,000 - 35,000.  Right now it looks like she won't even debut in the top 40! Somewhere around 41 or 42 it looks like. This is bad. I knew the album would not sell as well as BNN, her sound now is not as radio friendly as it was before, and White Houses is no ATM as far as sparking the interest of general audiences.  I had no idea it would be this bad however.  Basically, Vanessa's only audience now is the diehard fans.

What do you all think this will mean for Vanessa's career? I know all the fans that have bought the album love it but is that enough? Will the label still allow her to continue or will she be dropped? I love Vanessa's music and this album is so much more creative and mature than BNN. It's a shame that mainstream audience just want boring, safe music and won't take a chance on something like Vanessa. I just feel so bad for her, since she clearly put her heart and soul into this album. Whatever happens though, I will continue to support her and I know all you Nessaholics will too. Hell, if the masses won't support her, we all have to show her we're still behind her.

What does everyone else think?

It has nothing to do with her music sounding, the promotion just sucked that's all, if the lable put in more promotion then MAYBE she might do better, but who knows, i dunno that's just what i think. *shrugs*

Well, hopefully the label doesn't drop her, but even if they do, I know we can count on her to continue to make the music we all love.  I'm sure she'll keep on keeping on. :D
I think you underestimate the level of my sneakiness

Patience, patience....  Word of mouth and another single should propel Harmonium up the charts...
First week sales are usually just a reflection of a "brand name" as opposed to substance. Not everyone knows VC (and her music) as well as we do.
And sales rank doesn't necessarily = profitability.... record companies and stores are learning this..slowly but surely...there was a great article about this in Wired a month ago...

So, patience... and just enjoy the music and spread the word.  VC is obviously not living in cardboard box, so I think she'll be continuing to make music for many years to come no matter what.

For me it's a glance
And a smile on your face
A touch of your hands

she had a pretty big crowd yesterday. I don't see her liking all that fame anyway.

A&M sucked the big one at promoting her. I am really mad at them.

This might mean the end of her A&M Career.... do you know where you got this info?

No, she probably doesn't, she's said so herself. However, she needs it to keep a record contract so she can keep making music that is released in a quality, professional manner.

Exactly. Honestly I can see them throwing a second single out with no promo, it will flop and the project/era will be abandoned. And after that...who knows for Vanessa.

I think she has enough appeal to get a contract from some label even if it might not be large. She may be better off for it since she could make the music she wants. I don't think having a huge label is best for some artists. Look at how successful Norah Jones is at the small Blue Note label. I don't think it's totally a bad thing to not be with the current label.
Wonder how much it'd cost to start our own label. Maybe that could be our next ATR project.  8)

u should wait and check billboard.. i dont think hitsdailydouble is as accurate as billboard.. but i could be wrong. i thought she was selling very well (i work at a cd store) and we sold like 15 copies in the first few days.. thats pretty good for our store. not as good as eminem who sells about 60 per day but yeah lol

Hits is an estimate but normally very close to billboard. Selling well in one store means nothing when you look nationwide at hundreds, thousands of stores. And, dayum, 60 Eminem cds a day :p
