A Joel Schumacher Film

Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera

December 22nd in Select Cities or January 21st Nationwide!

Starring:Gerard Butler,  Emmy Rossum,  Patrick Wilson,   :D Minnie Driver :D ,  Miranda Richardson

Directed by: Joel Schumacher
Produced by: Andrew Lloyd Webber

Drama, Musical/Performing Arts and Suspense/Horror

2 hrs. 23 min.

This romantic musical epic is about a mysterious masked figure, Erik (Butler), who roams the undergrounds of 19th century Paris, centering his activity around (or under) the Opera Populaire, where he tutors a beautiful young soprano, Christine (Rossum), who goes on to upstage the city's most famous opera singer, Carlotta (Driver)   . The Phantom thinks he's found love, until Christine's childhood boyfriend, Vicomte de Chagny (Wilson) shows up.

I can't wait to see this film, I was listening to some of the songs and they are really great.  Looks like a very well done musical.

I saw an interview with Emmy the other day- she is absolutely beautiful and so so talented. She's only 18! I hated the musical on stage but hopefully it'll be better on film.

Who has seen this movie? It came out today.

I was soooooooooo excited to see it. I am in love with the musical. I'm more passionate about this musical then i am about any other musical, artist, etc (yes, even Vanessa, tho she's my fave artist). I have grown up on this music, singing it, and I LOVE it! So ofcourse I was excited for a movie. I went to see it today and I was impressed! It's nowhere near as good as the musical, but I wasnt expecting it to be. I saw it twice when Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford were in the cast and no one compares to their voices, and you cant get the same feeling seeing a movie as seeing it live anyways.

The Phantom was played by Gerard Butler. He was really good, and definitely handsome. His voice was a lil raspy and had more of a rock sound to it than I was expecting. He was a good actor, but his voice can't compare to Michael Crawford at all. But once you get used to his character... the voice is good I think.

Christine Daae was played by Emmy Rossum. She is definitely the star of this movie, hands down! She is an incredible actress and has an amazing voice. Not as pure as Sarah Brightman, but still REALLY good!

Raul is played by Patrick Wilson. He is very good as well! He is a great actor with a great voice!

I cried 2 times throughout the movie. The first time was at my favorite scene, when Christine and Raul are singing "All I Ask". That part is great!!! And then again at the end when Christine, Raul and the Phantom are in the dungeon. My other favorite scenes were Prima Dona and Masquerade.

If you like the musical and the music in it... definitely go see it! Or even if you havent seen it and like this kind of thing, GO! I'm definitely seeing it again! I LOVE IT!!!!

edit:
one more thing to add... haha. i think they did a good job in sticking to the story of the musical. some parts where added that you dont see in the musical, but i'm thinking maybe they're from the book (which i want to read). but they go word for word on much of it, which I loved. it's mostly the same... just a lil different. but i'm o glad they didnt change it up too much

I was readiing the script of the broadway musical and listening to the soundtrack again tonight... and I noticed even more that it is sooo well done the way they were able to do much of it word for word.

the only part that really sticks out as not being in the musical is the part of how the phantom gets to the opera house in the first place. am i right that this isn't in the musical? i could be forgetting it... when I heard the song, "Twisted Every Way", I wondered if that was new cause I had totally forgotten it, but then I found it on the soundtrack, so I was wrong.

I really like the song tho... how could I forget?

“Twisted every way, what answer can I give?
Am I to risk my life, to win the chance to live?
Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice?
Do I become his prey? Do I have any choice?
He kills without a thought, he murders all that's good.
I know I can't refuse and yet, I wish I could ...
Oh God - if I agree, what horrors wait for me in this, the Phantom's opera?”
