I've always opened some presents on Christmas Eve, and I can explain why. I have a bunch of dispersed branches in my family (and that's branches with a lowercase "b"), and as such there are usually at least three or four different dinner-and-exchange events to attend. When I was little, my dad's family always met the Sunday before Christmas, so anything my grandparents, aunts, or uncles got me from that side was opened that day. My mother's family always had dinner on Christmas Eve night, and we opened up our gifts from each other there. Santa Claus gifts usually appeared at the grandkids' houses while we were there at Granny's, and they were usually opened either really late at night (like after midnight because we stayed at Granny's really late some years) or the next morning. When I was little, my mother's grandmother and her family had a Christmas dinner on Christmas afternoon, and we always went out there until she went into a nursing home. Now I rarely see any of my father's or great-grandmother's family anymore.
