How would you class Vanessa's music.
I mean even she has said she is not a pop princess.
So how would you class it?
Rock? Pop? (These are just examples)
Jon.

I'd classify it as pop or alternative.

My music is pop music,
But because its popular
I think there are qualities to the first album that are very
'Avant-garde' in comparison to what's going on.

And the media really kinda dumbs down who you are
And tries to get you to fit into one sentence and one headline and
That's it, that's how you're known and it doesn't really define me.

Like I'm constantly being put into that little pop singer mold
And it, and It's ---
God, I just can't wait to break out of it.

I think it depends on the song... most non-nessaholics know her because of ATM... which is a pop song... but I wouldn't call other songs pop... so alternative is a good all-round description.
I totally relate to Vanessa. When people ask me what kind of music I write, I'm a bit lost for words...

:rainbowafro: A big toast to all the original musos out there like Vanessa... who are so much more than just a label... keep defying definition!

 Once enough other artists follow V into 'the genre' she has created with her
music, then it might be given a name. V doesn't fit known classifications well   :?

obviously music needs to be categorised into genre's, as people have different music tastes.

one person may like RnB, while the other may like pop.

not to mention award ceremonies. there are category's like "best pop album" and "best hip hop album", etc.

so music DOES need to be categorised into genre's.

I've never really bought into the whole "genre" thing.  I like certain artists, and sorta like certain others, and most that I really like do a wide variety of styles (The Beatles, for example).  That's why I hate radio stations.  They play lots of music of only a couple different types, and though they play some artists I may really like, they also play lots of artists I abhor.  But if you only look at styles and genres (which, by the way, in English, should be "genera"), then my personal music tastes would make no sense.

This is from an article on popYOUlarity.com:

popYOUlarity.com: How do you take and listen to music today and kind of define your own style?
Vanessa: I think the music scene right now is kind of formulating itself, kind of morphing into something. I don't think at the moment it is really defined by one sound, which is good and bad. It can be confusing. I think that I define my own style, I don't know. I like what I like. I like the melodies that I like. I write them down and I play them for people and I think that there is definitely a classical feeling to what I do. I think that it is my own special breed of music. [/b]

I thought it was relevant. The link is http://www.popyoularity.com/variables/vanessainterview.shtml

Is that a pic of Amy Lee (Evanescance) !!!????? Looks like her; it'scertainly not Vanessa! Lol.

And another...

VC: It’s me. It sounds like me. I have a very distinct style, and being on the piano, there’s not a lot of pianists out there that do pop or pop-rock or whatever you want to call it. So that’s going to follow me whatever direction I go in. I will be going in different directions. I feel lucky that my fans will follow me. It’s nice. I don’t know if it’s going to be trillions of people following me when I get to be 35 and I’m doing a record of waltzes, but I know that there’ll be somebody there that’s interested, and that feels good.

And Vanessa, yes I'm sure we will still be following your music when you are 35.   :)
