Polls / Nature vs. Nurture
« on: November 21, 2003, 06:41:54 pm »
personally, i think it's both. i don't think you can have one without the other. However i know that there are people who do disagree with that. I'm interested in what people think about it.

Polls / Psychology - Soft or Hard Science?
« on: November 15, 2003, 05:37:36 pm »
I was just wondering what people considered it to be. I'm not really sure, since I just started my psychology class.

*note*a hard science is something that requires formulas and things like that that can be proven, and that have rules you need to follow. A soft science is considered to be something that does not require and set of rules or formulas, like psychology.

Entertainment - Movies / TV / Books / Newsies
« on: November 15, 2003, 02:20:34 pm »
okay, like Keeping Up Appearances, Nikki and I are probably the only losers that know about this but.....

there is a kick ass movie out there called Newsies. it was made in 1991 (92 ?) and was made by Disney. It didn't do too well, but has managed to gain a cult-following.

If you don't like musicals, then you probably won't like this movie, but you should see it anyway! It features Christian Bale *sighs* and Gabriel Daemon *sighs again* and that guy from Doogie Howser....i forget his name

if you want to learn more about Newsies, go here: http://www.newsies-realm.com/home.html

it's one of my favorite movies of all time. go see it now! go! go! go!

this doesn't really flow well because it's the meshing of a song and a poem, but tell me what you think of what i have now:

You tell such pretty lies
so sweet it could almost be the truth
And I came to realize
over dinner the other night
I let you run my life
and you ran it straight in to the ground

well, that’s the price I have to pay
for wanting things another way.

And as my lips pucker
eyes water
throat choke in a silent sob
you smile
and everything became clear
this is how you like me.

Believe me when I say
it’s not suicidal
I just don’t want to live today
I know I can’t change things
I know it will stay the same.

And I’ll go on everyday
maybe slowly
learning to break away.

Completely Off-Topic / Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan (please help!)
« on: October 05, 2003, 07:23:45 am »
Since the fall of the Taliban, Afghan women are now able to go back to school! (Whoop whoop!) However, most school have been destroyed, and there is little funding for school supplies. I'm not sure if you guys know, but there are many fund raisers and campaigns to help out the women of Afghanistan. you can go here: http://www.feminist.org/afghan/intro.asp to join an action team, send money, or buy crafts. All proceeds go to the women of Afghanistan.

If you don't want to send money, then you can do what my Junior Ladies of Charity group is doing and send school supplies. Please help guys, they need us.

If you have no idea who or what the Taliban is, then go here: http://www.feminist.org/afghan/facts.html to read up.

*note*please no debating or arguing or anything like that, i started this thread to gain awareness, and it'd be super if we could keep it that way!

Creative Endeavors / Suicide
« on: October 03, 2003, 12:46:58 pm »
Bah, i hate my poems. But my friend wants me to read this at an open mic coming up at a poetry competition, and want your guys' feedback on it. Be brutal, tell me exactly what you think i should change about it, what you don't like, etc.

And just so you know, this poem was NOT written about me. It was written about my best friend who was cutting herself. She didn't see what was wrong with it, and I did, and we got in to a very big fight about it. So I wrote this poem, she saw it, and everything was better....the end. Anyways, enough of my babblin rhetoric, here's the poem:

Suicide

I haven't been here in a while;
Your place of being.
The setting has changed
Please forgive me
For going away.
But you need to realize
That I have my own demons to battle
And my world isn't covered in roses
Like it may seem.

It looks different,
From when I last visited.
I noticed you've redecorated.
I wonder what happened to the last roses
You left hanging over the doorway.
I notice your window is painted black.
Or could it be the dirt you allowed to accumulate
Not bothering to clean it off?
Whatever it may be
I know it's clouded the way to your heart.

Palpable would be the word
To describe the aura.
A negative cynical outlook
Almost looks me in the face.
"You are just another non-understanding oversympathetic passerby," It says as I move closer.

I notice the knife
Gleaming on the counter.
Freshly sharpend
I know what it is there for.
I start to talk to you,
But it's like you do not here me.
It's like you don't want to here me.
Aggrivated I shout at you.
"CAN'T YOU SEE WHAT YOU'VE BECOME!!! DON'T YOU SEE????"

I wait for you to say something.
Nothing.
Just an empty stare,
And the knife in your hand.

Completely Off-Topic / Went a-Whale Watching
« on: September 24, 2003, 06:20:19 pm »
two weeks ago i got to go on a whale watch in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It was awesome! The first day we went to Boston where we ate our lunch at Quincy Market: (*note: sorry the pics are so big, i don't have enough memory left to host smaller ones. If one of the mods thinks they need to be smaller, just let me know, and i can ask someone to host them for me!)

After that, we got to eat our lunch at Cheers:

mmmmhmmmm that was some good eatin   After eating we went on a "Duck Tour". it was really cool, it was this big bus/car that could go in water as well as drive around on the streets.

The next day, we went on a nature hike. It was so beautiful. After hiking through the woods and the salt marshes, the trail brought you to the beach:

Then we headed to Province Town, Cape Cod. We did a bit of shopping, and then boarded our boat:

Thankfully no one got sea sick! We only saw two whales  :(  but they did get close up to our boat, which was nice!

I'm the one on the far left with the dark brown hair. bah that salt water can screw with your hair like you wouldn't believe! we got off the boat and it looked like we hadn't showered in days. Anywhose, it was an awesome trip! if you ever get the chance to go on a whale watch, i highly recommend it.  If you want to see the rest of my pics (cuz i kind of went picture happy and took four roles of film   ) go here: http://www.msnusers.com/MyVanessaCarltonPics/shoebox.msnw?Page=4

Other Musicians / Bright Eyes
« on: July 30, 2003, 05:50:14 pm »
anyone like them? they've started to make quite a name for themselves on the  underground scene...there's too many songs by them to say which ones are best to download, but the two that i've been listening to most are "Waste of Paint" and "Lover I don't Have to Love". "Drunk Kid Catholic" and "Padriac My Prince" are pretty good as well.

^that's Connor Oberst, the lead singer. the picture was taken from http://www.sagamore.iupui.edu/32/32-11/11bright-eyes.html

i have yet to see them in concert or anything like that. my best friend who is set on marrying connor turned me on to their music...it's awesome! check 'em out  :)

Completely Off-Topic / I need computer help!!!
« on: July 04, 2003, 03:38:34 pm »
okay, so here goes. You know the search bar underneath the tool bar, where you put the URL to a webpage in? well, it's gone on my comp. screen. I've tried everything to get it back, even emailing the help center for HP. but nothing's working. it won't come back!

does anyone know what to do? I've already tried going to 'view' then 'toolbars' then 'address' bar, and it' doesn't work. All that happens is a little section of my toolbar says 'address' on it. i'm so frustrated! can anyone help?
