Post by: JamesCrowley on August 05, 2012, 07:56:11 am
This was the tweet:

Goin bck 2 this vortex http://realworldstudios.com/  in sept to commence work on the "euphoria" album w Mr.Osborne.

Am I just getting hysterically excited over nothing... or does this mean album number 5?! :D

Oh thanks, that's brilliant! I heard 'Patience' and really enjoyed the new more electronic-y sound. This seems so soon after ROTR considering how long a break she had after Heroes and Thieves (not that I'm complaining at ALL :) ) Glad to hear she's back at Real World too, although a British tour certainly wouldn't go amiss  ;D

SO excited by this!

Looks like she's breaking the tradition of waiting three years between albums.

I think it's a good tradition to break!  However, it could still be awhile, how long did we wait from recording to release for ROTR?!

About a year and a half? But even then it took her a while to build up the courage to go ahead & write 'Rabbits'. This time it's a bit different - she's been writing since she finished 'Rabbits' and already plans to record. It's a very good sign.

I just hope she books a few gigs here too. I'm dying to see her live.

WHOOOPPPPP. I am so excited.

& I thought When Enrique named his album Euphoria he chose an awesome name. Hopefully V can bring back some redemption to the name after the "meh" album haha : )

Euphoria is a great album title! Although, I don't think that's the exact name. Nessa has never been that simple with her tweets. She wouldn't tweet the album name. It's probably code for something. Perhaps "Euphorium" or "Euphorian on the Run"  ::)

I think the euphoria she refers to is the drug-induced state of giddiness/happiness. I think it also refers to the sort of trance you get into when you listen to electronic music, with the reverb and multiple layers of sound.

Wow amazing. Vanessa + Steve + Real World Studio - Electronica = Can't be bad in my opinion :) LOVE LOVE LOVE Take it Easy.. Vanessa gave me my (and her) dream record with Rabbits, it's okay for me if this is gonna sound like Patience even if I wasn't a fan it's still Vanessa. Can't wait. :)

I'm really hoping I like this album. Kind of apprehensive, but hoping for the best.

I know what you mean about being apprehensive.  I have not been a big fan of the stuff she's been posting (blouse, mike snow, washed out, etc) so I'm just hoping it pans out.  Ultimately, if she's happy I'm happy.  I will buy the album regardless, just like with Jewel's fourth album that I did not care for (0304), I just don't listen to it that much, or ever.  I can't imagine it will be exactly like her inspirations.  She tends to put the V spin on it, so I just have to keep the faith!

I'm not overly keen on electronica in general, but I really liked the way she fused it with her own style in Patience. If the album still retains her "essence" as it were, I'd be happy.

Be Not Euphoria doesn't sound too bad, actually.  :) I don't know where Take It Easy will fit on this "Electronica" record, though. I hope she doesn't change it too much. I would rather it be left off the album completely. Maybe she'll turn Best Behavior and all the other unreleased songs into electronic versions. I wouldn't mind hearing an electro BB.

Actually, V already made the same kind of transition when she made ROTR. And as it turned out, it is something better ;)

I think if we try and listen to some of V's influences (I've been trying Hot Chips) the over all effect is amazing.

I think you can play around with your production so much it's really interesting and I think it's quiet adventurous since (in my complete juvenile experience of recording music so slap me if I'm wrong) acoustic recording seems to be pretty limited with regards to production and getting the right kind of desired sounds in the song.

I hope I'm making sense and not just sounding like an idiot who knows jack shit about recording (I basically am)

With regards to a title being "Euphoria". Maybe that's the kind of sounds she's heading for - dream like state-ey though I'm keeping my fingers crossed behind my back hoping against hope that I love this album.

I feel like a traitor.
Title: Re: New Album- Euphoria?!

euphoria is probably a working title.  if she does go with it, it would remind me of things in buddhism and the such where the goal is nirvana, or with jungian psychology (which Joseph campbell bases his work on) is individuation.  Both can relate to "euphoria" or being so satisfied with life you are giddy, elated, happy, at one with oneself.  However, I think that since she put the "euphoria" in quotes, it's most likely not the title but the feeling you are supposed to get when listening to it.

lol, i could not dislike the name "euphoria" more. It makes me think about Eurovision and i dont like the word at all. I dont like the name "Patience" nor "Take it easy" either, i find them sort of cheesy and too common. Excuse my taste :)

I dont mind about the songs, she will never do bad in my eyes, but i dont really have super high expectations cause in my ears i know nothing will be as good as harmonium :) I'm excited for the "new" stuff and sound tho <3

Whether "Euphoria" is the name of the album or the project isn't clear, but i'm confident this will be a Vanessa Carlton album.
She mentioned a year ago a new song about a ghost in a lighthouse or something? And then tweeted about "a song idea like a cinema". Then recently she has given teases of new songs "Patience" and "Take it Easy", and mentioned that she has been quite in a productive space with her songwriting.

Does anyone have links for the teasers?

She needs to finish that song she played in Gotti's Way. The most played 57-second song in my iTunes.
and somehow puts in (Dark) Carnival as a bonus track, cuz it will smash.

I found the real world studios website, and it shows the availability of the different studios you can book. Seen as Vanessa said she's heading back there in September, the main room is booked for the last two weeks of the month, so hopefully that's the start of the recording time of Euphoria, or whatever new name Vanessa has concocted :)

we already have a lot of song titles (probably) from euphoria:

patience (which i don't think will be on the album)
take it easy
seven swords
do it
back to life
moneymaker (i still hope haha)

that's half an album!

well, one of her tweets said
"Workin on back to life with mr steele. Best to let him do the leg work." (with a picture of skye at the piano playing his violin)

It's our assumption that this is a song.  Some of us also assumed that Bride had a video and Vanessa herself said there was not one (to Manny when he saw her Friday) so assumptions can be wrong.
I don't know where "do it" came from.

In the article just posted on twitter a potential song list was revealed!!  An astute Phantom Friend on facebook realized it, I just scrolled right past it in the photos section... I'm not tech savvy enough to get the photo to fit here, but the list is:

Patience
7 Swords
Unlock the Lock
Take it Easy
The Only Way
Do it
Let it go
Cold Young Heart
Never Together
Moneymaker

very good interview, tons of pics, and new little insights to V's world.

From the live songs we already heard,
I have high hope that this album is going to top ROTR:)

i've just watched the video and i'm so proud of myself for having seen the setlist. haha
i'm sooo excited. all the titles are mysterious and i can totally see mythological and shamanic influences on them.
i love the background song and it reminds me a bit of patience (in a different key).

ps.: "back to life" was dropped out or it never was a song? hahaha
Title: Re: New Album- Euphoria?!

I got a feeling that the background music was played by V. By the sound quality, the background music sounds like something that is  recorded in a videocam then just ripped. I think it was ripped from the clip of her playing the piano in the video.

As for the blackboard, I really wonder if she did it on purpose. If she did, why? She was never this open when it comes to tracks before.

But I am happy nonetheless.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe this is an unintentional leak. I mean, I am happy that we already know pretty much everything about the record, but I'd rather have it from V herself, knowing that it would be with her consent. And besides, I think the mystery of the tracklist before the album release adds more excitement to the wait.

Oh, well. What's done is done, so we should just live with it.

i'm sure she's not gonna do anything like britney or christina or whatever. i just used the term she used to describe what she has been doing. it's obviously gonna sound more like mansions on the moon, youth lagoon, grimes and etc.

I can't wait to shake my money maker to moneymaker. Ever since she tweeted about it in like 2010 I've been frothing at the the mouth for some upbeat tunes from V.

Lol. I so love this woman.

Given that she maybe snoops around here, what intrigued me was Cantharides was written on the board. Which I understand is Spanish Fly which I believe is an aphrodisiac?

And Night Flight - The novel whose cover we were discussing looked like some of the artwork that was going around for bride..

I love that board.

Phantoms!

I haven't written a proper note in a while.  After my last orchestra gig in October, by the sea, in North Carolina, (the night of the hurricane), I've mostly been laying low. Traveling...but not for work: Chicago, Providence, Phoenix, Bath.  All the while I have been writing a new record, slowly weaving this project together.  I spent three weeks at Real World Studios last month and I've figured out the sonic palette for said album with Mr Steve Osborne.  This will be another roots-deep collaboration and aesthetically in the vein of Rabbits but heading into the thicket, a new place, so we gettin a bit crafty. Hear the Bells may have to be given credit for the door opener to the sounds on this one.

I've also been so happy playing with my talented friends from other bands. Wonderful musicians who make me see things differently and have helped me distill some of my own ideas even. I need to send these people chocolates and gold to further express my gratitude.

Now I'm back in NYC, at my desk, just in from Pennsylvania, where Victor blissfully slid around on a frozen lake chasing balls (he's a dog not a man). I've got half an album to complete and tons of canvas to dye indigo. I've also been knee deep into sleeping like a teenage boy, the Grace Coddington memoir, Tracy Anderson, beer and neon signs.

Keep it classy.

I was wondering that too but nothing's been posted in there since 2009 so I was a little bit intimidated haha. Plus the sticky does say that no new threads can be posted in there anyway, so this ended up being the best place for it.

When those pictures came out of Vanessa's chalkboard and there was a symbol written on it in the shape of a T.  I wondered what it was.  I had forgotten all about it until I was in barnes and noble and came across a book of symbols.  It reminded me of the symbol on her blackboard so I picked it up, flipped to a page and there it was!  The very first page I looked at.  I'm pretty sure it's the Tau cross and I found some info.  Here is one place:
http://www.seiyaku.com/customs/crosses/antau.html and wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_of_Tau
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with her album it just might be the letter "T" who knows!  But my guess is that it means something to her and it might be related to the album.  Just thought I'd share  ;D

I was back in barnes and noble the other day and looked at the book again (I reallly want to buy it but wtf would I use it for?  I'm a book whore) any who, I actually read what it said and it said that people who the symbol is associated with all had a resurrection, so that it symbolized that, new life, rejuvenation and those kinds of things.  I thought that it fits very well into what Vanessa seems to be about with this album.  she's trying somethings new after having breathed new life into herself with the writing of rabbits.  i feel the overall theme for the album will include exploring new avenues within yourself and with the world with eyes that are opened anew.

Vanessa appears to be no longer signed to Razor and Tie:

@Fool_4_Music: Anxiously awaiting new @VanessaCarlton tunes. Hey, Vanessa...are you still signed to Razor & Tie?

@VanessaCarlton: @Fool_4_Music thanks! Nope xo

I wonder if this is to do with the change in the music genre of her upcoming album? She never seems to stay with one record company, but I thought that she might with R&T, because they seem more niche and suited to her as a less commercial artist...just thought I'd share with you guys.

Yeah it is weird. Like it seems like her record labels all seem really supportive at first, but then once her albums do poorly they want her to either change or move on.

And this is the marketing/advertising major in me but she has had shit promotion since White Houses. Like the worst. With the rise of pseudo-folk music being popular right now (lumineers, mumford and sons, etc.) there is a space for her on the radio. It's the label's job to get her out there. I know she doesn't care about fame and blah blah blah but she has always said she wants her music to reach people. She can't do it all on her own.

I'd have been more surprised if she was still signed to them. The sales were poor and the project was handled all wrong (sound familiar?).

It'll be interesting to see how this new record is released & promoted.

Hehehe...when I hear of White Houses, I can't help to remember that on MTV or whatever, when the video premiered, it said White HORSES instead of Houses :) Still makes me smile. Ironic since Vanessa loves horses (I think she does?)

OK I think we can officially discard that list on her blackboard as final now since things seem to have changed. Maybe she's written more? We'll get a bunch of them I presume, but whatever happens to the others I hope we still get to hear 'em!

Songs confirmed for the album:
Willows
Take it Easy
House of 7 Swords
A Matter of Time

Also a recent tweet confirms I'll Wait For You won't be on there, and an estimated summer release. Feels like such a long wait :( But she needs time to finish the album and start her family! The new recordings show it will be worth it.

I have to say that I've not listened to the new songs too much.  I finally heard them live, and I liked them, but I'm not in love with them nor do i feel the need to listen to them all the time, like I did with the ROTR songs when we had those before the album came out.
I was wondering to myself why and I figured it out.  The songs are very repetitive, a quality that she has not used in her writing since BNN.  All her songs have been so lyrically driven in past albums; they tell a story and always move forward.  I feel these songs lack some of that story telling and imaginative lyrics as songs past.  I'm not saying they aren't good and have a complete lack of these things, just somewhat deficient.  I'm thinking the album presentation of the songs will be more of a complete package with all the different techniques she's been utilizing lately, but it used to be that I liked the acoustic better than album!  I guess I will see.

i see what you mean. i also find the songs repetitive, but that's part of the style she's exploring. have you heard the songs she's been listening to? it's all about sound effects, so they repeat the lyrics a lot. i actually think it's really cool, but i understand what you're saying. just give it time, i'm sure the songs will grow on you! :)

Not sure if the new website is a prelude to the styles of next album, or just a bit friendlier towards mobile devices and slow computers, but there's new merchandise on the store:

Hey  there,

I  just got back from the UK where I spent a week working on my new album and finishing up the 7 tracks I did with  Steve Osborne. It was six months in between the two sessions we took to record but we needed the time  to digest what we were crafting...plus it's hard for me to get to England  sometimes. This is a rather unorthodox album. The approach is intense cause it's  mostly just Osborne and I sitting in the chalet at the studio, listening and  tweaking and playing weird shit. Pretty awesome. I was in heaven. We have three more songs to go so I will be finishing those up here in the states.

In  other newzzzz...I'm  making up some of the shows I had to reschedule from last fall. I will be playing three shows starting next Thursday. The dates and ticket links are posted below.  Sorry bout that - hope to  see all you folks that I missed the first time.

Also, I'm a  married woman now so no more funny business, ok?

xx

v

10 songs. i can't wait to know what she's calling the record. :)

Looks as if the new album won't be called Euphoria but "Liberman."  Lieberman, Liebermann, or Liberman are names deriving from Lieb, a German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) nickname for a person from the German lieb or Yiddish lib, meaning 'dear, beloved'.[1] Many Lieberman families originally spelled the name in Hebrew or Cyrillic characters, so variations in the spelling occurred during transliteration to the Latin alphabet.

This makes sense now, seeing as she is Jewish and her past tweets talked about liberman.

She's so sneaky, she's mentioned that title in quite a few tweets/posts and they slid under the radar. It's a quite an album name departure, don't you think? It's definitely not your more conventional titling choices, like perhaps her other albums are. Regardless, I'm looking forward to it, 3 songs left to mix!

Edit:

This is just me speculating, and I might be totally off, but do you think because of all of the events that have happened this past year, such as starting a family with John, and tragically losing her baby, that it has made her think about her past/heritage/culture and how this will move forward into her new family, her new 'dear, beloved.'? Jut a thought..

Nevertheless, I LOVE how she opens us up to these new artistic paradigms with each album. She evolves and takes us to places we would never find ourselves if we were travelling alone.

I can't wait till she fills us in on the inspiration behind this whole album! :D

I know it's not strictly related to the new album, so forgive me for posting in here, it's just that I don't think it necessarily warrants making a new thread.

I've just been reading a Deer Tick interview, and this cropped up

Quote
"Might we ever see an album of duets/covers with the wife? Oh yeah. We’ve been thinking about that. Probably country and western songs. My mother-in-law really wants us to do it, and she’s a really smart lady.

I reckon this is actually quite plausible, Vanessa has recently been getting involved in a lot more independent projects, such as that charity Songs for Slim a while back, and a cover/new interpretation of lyrics and musical arrangement wouldn't be too time consuming, I don't think. It's a possibility we may have to look forward to :)

She posted on the 14th (last Friday) that it was bein mastered get the next two weeks, so I'm not sure whether it's been finished very quickly, or half done. I suppose if it's just a mock up for Stevie to do the track listing, it doesn't really matter. Also, someone on twitter asked if that was the final artwork and she said no.
Title: Re: New Album- Euphoria?!

Mastering is the final step in making an album.  You really do need a running order to do it properly.  The goal is to make the songs hang together sonically in a uniform way, that no songs are too loud or too soft.  You add the last bits of EQ and/or compression, determine the length of the gaps in between songs, etc.  All Stevie would need to do the running order is copies of the final mixes.

It's not that you cannot mess with a running order after mastering, but there may need to be some minor tweaks if you switch songs around.

Thanks for that,  hopefully Liberman's on the way then, if the running order is getting sorted., then it appears to be the penultimate step. Fingers crossed for some updates in the coming weeks.

I don't believe that she has explicitly said anything about the title with regard to where it came from/what it means/represents. Any interpretation is all ours

Vanessa's middle name is a family name and spelled that way because her grandfather changed it. It was Lieberman, but he changed it to Lee.  :)

this tweet yesterday:

while it's not definitive proof, it does lend credibility to the information.

Full name: Vanessa Lee Carlton. [My middle name is a family name and spelled that way] because my grandfather changed it. It was Lieberman, but he changed it to Lee.

nice find!

a recent tweet "House of Seven Swords (3)- Liberman " (with a pic of what looks like a tarot card to me, or possibly a painting) makes me think that this song will be the third song on the album.  Possibly first single?
Title: Re: New Album- Euphoria?!

Unusual, isn't it, to have the first single as the third track? She usually goes for having it in first place, such as Nolita Fairytale and Carousel.

Not that I'm questioning Vanessa, of course! Hopefully, it'll start getting some press now that it's mastered, which I guess is one of the latter steps to completion, as it's awfully quiet around here.

Biggest thrill as a child: We had this weeping willow tree with this swing, and I would always sing on the swing and hum, but I would turn it, to tighten the rope, and let go. I would do that for hours. I would just out there humming and twisting. I would make up songs and hum them.

from the same interview!

the name was Lieberman, why is she calling the record "Liberman", without the "e"?

That's awesome about the Willow tree, I'm glad she's incorporated it into some of her music. Good point about the spelling, I was going to suggest the interview was wrong but then there's that Instagram picture of the painting and it's spelt without the 'e' too...

I guess we're at the beginning of the speculation that surrounds every album, I love it! Any ideas of artwork/cover themes, I thought maybe she might incorporate the tarot cards, but in a subtle way, maybe just the symbols, rather than the entire cards.

I feel like there's so much beautiful imagery in Tarot (though I don't know much about how that all works), so it would be great if some of that could be incorporated into the single artwork.

By the way, how do we know that HoSS is the first single? Did she say so somewhere? I feel so out of the loop!  :P

No, it was  a total guess by me with no evidence really.  she tweeted the house of 7 swords yesterday with the picture of the tarot card, and I took it from there.  posed it as a question, not as fact

"Ascension (10) - Liberman ((painting Arthur Wesley Dow)) http://instagram.com/p/m820IAMdlZ/"

pretty painting, looks inspired by Arizona landscapes.. it can be quite beautiful out there with the red rocks.  I can't wait to hear it!

Woo! New song that I don't remember seeing Ascension on that chalkboard picture from StyleLikeU.. I guess that was a rough early draft.  I have a feeling for some reason that this will just be instrumental, really dreamy and thick synth sounds. I guess we'll wait and see.

So the original 'track list' is as follows:

Patience
7 Swords
Unlock the Lock
Take it Easy
The Only Way
Do It
Let it Go
Cold Young Heart
Never Together
Money Maker

Track list as it stands is:

Willows
Take it Easy
3. House of Seven Swords
Patience (?)
A Matter of Time
Unlock the Lock
10. Ascension

I guess we'll have to wait for the full lyrics of everything, to find if the new titles were substitutions from the 'original' track list, or new songs entirely.

Just out of curiosity, how spoiled is everyone? I've listened to Take it Easy and Unlock the Lock, and that tiny Patience snippet, but aside from that I have no idea about the rest of the songs, I'm keeping them fresh for the album.

Haha I hear ya! I think it's done...she's just sitting on it for some reason :-\. I wonder if she's going to find another label to release it... which might be a good idea because I am SUPER skeptical she will give us anything (music videos, tv performances) if she's releasing it herself.

According to razor and tie she is still listed as an artist on their site, although I was sure she said/or we found out that she had cut ties with them.

If she's not signed, somebody should snap Liberman up in a heartbeat - who wouldn't jump at the chance to have the one and only VC on their label?!
