General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Re: Vanessa on Twitter?

I enjoy the vinyl sound so much better!! Doesn't lose quality.
Actually, it does. Vinyl by design has a more limited dynamic range than CD, and on top of that, it's a contact medium. The stylus touches the disc during playback and gradually wears it down. And on top of that, dust and hairs on the disc result in clicks and pops.

Yet all of that does have a certain charm to it.

I can't imagine anyone releasing an album only on an outdated niche format (albeit an outdated niche format that has a certain charm to it), so I wouldn't worry. That'd just be ASKING for people to make illegal copies on CD/web download.

If it's not sold at Best Buy, I know that I have to buy it off of iTunes. I'm not going to every store searching for it. Driving around would be crazy, but still, a digital album with digital album art is still not the same as the physical one.

Why don't you just order the CD from Amazon.com or another online store and have it shipped to you?

I'm not a big fan of buying music digitally, just cause I like to have the physical copy..though it sucks that Harmonium isn't even on iTunes
Me neither. IMO, you'd have to be crazy to pay top dollar (top pound?) for a "virtual" album without any cover art or anything.

Good point - actually, can anyone explain the point of the label? Excuse my ignorance, but couldn't V just release the album herself? I'm sure she has enough funds to do it xD

But then how could someone who lives outside of USA get her album?
I live in the UK and the answer to your question is: order it online and have it shipped over.

But it's irrelevant anyway - I don't think Heroes and Thieves was ever released outside the US, was it?

Actually, HMV here imported "Harmonium" themselves, I could buy it from a store shelf. I doubt they'd do the same for a small independent release though.

"It's Chinese New Year in San Francisco. And things are crack-lin'!"

How ridiculously cute :D

(Yes I still buy cds, I don't download or burn).
and i thought i was the only one :D
You're definitely not the only ones. Let's see:

Option 1: downloads
slightly lower sound quality
no cool artwork or booklet
no physical product, if you lose the file, you've lost the song
often Digital Rights Managed

Option 2: CD
uncompressed PCM sound quality, which you can convert to MP3 if you like - your choice
cool pictures and disc art
something you can be proud to have on the shelf
play it, copy it, as many times as you like, wherever you like

No contest - physical media for the win.

I guess you'd only really get close to figuring out what she was saying if you were that way yourself and had spent enough time thinking about it.

Oh you :)

The funniest thing is, she actually "came out" in 2008, at 2 minutes 10 seconds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlB3ZjmqR8w

It's here for you on video: "...relationships not approved of by your mother, or the government. In my case, it's always both. Who's to say?"

Ah well. It's a funny world. I can't wait for her next album.

Yeah, it's a totally different style, so I guess from their eyes it'll all be good.
I like a lot of "harder" music though, so I'm not biased that way.

72
Ouch, that's god-awful. It's actually kinda cool to hear the melody played on guitar like that - all is good until they start "singing" (or is that "sing-ranting")?

I read a description of Vanessa Carlton's music once that basically said, when she sings she goes off into her own little world and takes you there with her. That cover absolutely does not.

One other thing I have noticed (being European) is the moderate American reaction to any loved/respected figure announcing they belong to a sexuality other than straight. It usually goes something like: "Well, who cares what she does in her private life anyway" or, "Well she's still great". Both indicate a level of latent prejudice on a cultural, but not necessarily individual level.

Quote from: All I Ask 2003
In my opinion, bisexuality is not a legitimate sexual orientation; it is a half-measure for those too afraid to accept themselves as completely homosexual or a way for females to get attention.
That argument doesn't hold a lot of water. The fear of coming out as bisexual is the same as it is for coming out as homosexual. Your average bigot doesn't differentiate between the two. And contrary to how it may appear when you look at the number of female celebs choosing the "bisexual" label, they are both minority sexualities.

As for the original subject of this thread: you know what, I'm not surprised, but I am strangely delighted. There's a certain mild androgyny in her appearance that I've always admired, and I've always found the unashamed sexual honesty in her songs (White Houses springs to mind) incredibly refreshing - especially coming from a country where the media seems to believe that sexual acts are dirty and something to be ashamed of.

Go 'nessa :)
