Psychology - Soft or Hard Science?
« on: November 15, 2003, 05:37:36 pm »
I was just wondering what people considered it to be. I'm not really sure, since I just started my psychology class.

*note*a hard science is something that requires formulas and things like that that can be proven, and that have rules you need to follow. A soft science is considered to be something that does not require and set of rules or formulas, like psychology.

I voted a hard science because depending on which branch of Psychology you are in there are always different rules, formulas, etc. you need to follow and know and such. Especially in experimental psychology and neuroscience psychology. Clinical is more just rules and ethics than formulas.

lol, well we just started two days ago, so we're starting to learn about Wundt and Freud and all that good stuff. We're doing alot on dreams too, because our class is really interested in it. I would think it would be a hard science, because you have to do a lot of experimentation and trial and error to really come up with a good, solid theory, since people's minds all work so differently...it's very interesting so far!

My Mom was studying psychology but she said it "got weird" Junior year so halfway through the year she quit the class.

Whatever that tells you, I don't really know. Maybe, don't take the class unless you really want to or you're really interested. :X :X :X

This is soo random, it has nothing to do with anything, but I HAVE to tell someone! I just realized that selfish was slang back in the day! (Waaaayyy back in the day - When modern English (not the band - the language) was being developed!) Selfish is like SELF + ISH, like you know how peole say FREAKISH? or the car was BLUE-ISH? Well, those are obviously slang, so selfish is, too! 'Cept, now it's acceptable so maybe 300 years from now, Blueish Greenish will be a real color. You never know.

Popper says it's not even a real science

Psychology is a PSUEDO-Science

It can't be science if it can't be disproven (or proven).

It's a very convincing read.

thanks, i'll give it a read! i know that i can't make a real claim either way about psychology since i just started it, but it does seem like it should be considered a science, whether it be soft or hard. *shrugs* guess i'll make up my mind when i finish the course!

that's called rebracketing.  It's the same for words like Nickname, Santa Claus, apron, and sherif.  It's all about pushing words and syllables together when people are being careless when they speak and these changes persist for many years.

Sorry I stole your thread sis.  andrew might have to bust in here withhis thread hijackery pic.....i'll go back to the accent thread now....

I'm doing pyschology too. I consider it as a soft science. If you do a pyschology degree here you are frowned upon. That sounds awful, but a lot of people consider it as VERY easy.
