Any French speakers/writers?
« on: October 27, 2010, 04:23:24 am »
Is there anyone who could translate  something into French for me? It's  just a couple of paragraphs.
The song may be over, but the music never ends.

Haute Couture is of French origin and it refers to made-to-order, custom fitted clothing. The result is usually of the highest quality. Haute couture clothing is made to slim down the body. In 1908, new styles began to emerge. These styles were designed to slim down the body with form fitting pieces. The expectations of haute couture are so high that there are actually several requirements that labels must meet in order to label themselves as haute couture. They must: Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings, have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full-time, and each season they must present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs/exits with outfits for both daytime wear and evening wear. These rules were established in 1945, and today they are still followed. By the 1980’s, the term haute couture became associated with the term prêt-a-porter (ready to wear fashion). This ready to wear fashion is factory made and standard in sizing. Factory made clothing became widely popular in the early 1900’s and today it is what most people turn to due to its affordability.

Few people know that Chanel began her career off as a singer. Because she could not find enough work, in 1910, she became a hat maker. She eventually opened up her own hat shop called “Chanel Modes”. In 1915, she officially became recognized as a fashion design. Her vision was to replace sexy with elegance. Her clothing was simple, but because of this simplicity, it was widely popular. In fact, her most famous piece was the “little black dress” which has been a staple in almost every woman’s closet since its introduction. Chanel still remains a popular and highly coveted label among the fashion forward.

Also if anything is wrong please tell me. Haha. (:

Thanks.

Ghisy might improve that (she's 10 years older than me), but I think it's not bad for a first try. Just out of curiosity, why did you need a translation of this text :)

I do speak french too and just be careful because the translation that was given to you is extremely good so chances are your teacher won't even get all the meanings like "epouser le corps" - just be careful, I got help from someone for a german project and got totally screwed by my teacher who could tell in his sleep that i didn't wrote that. :)

Haha. My teacher didn't say anything...I'm in AP French so it's kind of expected that I know what pretty much everything means but she's a really sucky teacher. She only taught us how to be able to read it and pass whatever standardized tests the state gives us. She does the bare minimum in order to keep her job.

*ahem*, I'm a dude!!  ;D

Well, your translation is pretty good. "Slim down" usually means "amincir" ou "mincir" but I think your interpretation with "épouser le corps" is pretty accurate. Although, I'm surprised LauraH's teacher didn't say anything as this expression may not be very well known to foreigners learning French.

Sorry I had no time to take a look earlier!

You can do a "c cédille" on a qwerty keyboard with ALT + 135 command. The french equivalent for "lol" is "mdr" (mort de rire), but we use "lol" as much.

The translation was assessed? How much did you/i have :D
