Haute Couture is of French origin and it refers to made-to-order, custom fitted clothing. The result is usually of the highest quality. Haute couture clothing is made to slim down the body. In 1908, new styles began to emerge. These styles were designed to slim down the body with form fitting pieces. The expectations of haute couture are so high that there are actually several requirements that labels must meet in order to label themselves as haute couture. They must: Design made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings, have a workshop (atelier) in Paris that employs at least fifteen people full-time, and each season they must present a collection to the Paris press, comprising at least thirty-five runs/exits with outfits for both daytime wear and evening wear. These rules were established in 1945, and today they are still followed. By the 1980’s, the term haute couture became associated with the term prêt-a-porter (ready to wear fashion). This ready to wear fashion is factory made and standard in sizing. Factory made clothing became widely popular in the early 1900’s and today it is what most people turn to due to its affordability.
Few people know that Chanel began her career off as a singer. Because she could not find enough work, in 1910, she became a hat maker. She eventually opened up her own hat shop called “Chanel Modes”. In 1915, she officially became recognized as a fashion design. Her vision was to replace sexy with elegance. Her clothing was simple, but because of this simplicity, it was widely popular. In fact, her most famous piece was the “little black dress” which has been a staple in almost every woman’s closet since its introduction. Chanel still remains a popular and highly coveted label among the fashion forward.
Also if anything is wrong please tell me. Haha. (:
