I'll forward the information to my producer. We basically have until next week to get her to give the okay and if by like, wednesday she hasn't then we look at other artists.


I would have imagined Vanessa would have been okay with it, since shes a woman of the art rather than the record sales, and should encourage creativity. But getting in touch with her people has been a nightmare.

I've been producer in the past and it's never been this hard to get permission. People in my class have had the OKAY from people like Sigur Ros. And last year the band Texas was a greenlight for me.

Sigur Rós?!! I would love to see their projects.

Hey guys! This discussion about projects on Nessa really brings me back to my youth.

I can distinctly remember one of our world history projects in the 10th grade. The teacher, Ms. Thissletwat, asked us to "research one of the great families in history." Once those words came out of her mouth, I knew I had to do mine on the Carltons.

I had to do some background research on the Carltons, so I had established a little camp site on the tree branch facing Nessa's bedroom. As she listened to her music and read magazines (like the cool teen she was) I took notes on her behavioral patterns.

I convinced Nessa to invite me over to do some research and she completely put her best foot forward. She threw me in her coat closet to help me work and I gathered some of the most valuable information to my research. While collecting lint samples off the floor, which happened to have a distinctly pleasant taste I might add, she came in and escorted me out of the house (she knew that I had been working hard).

When Nessa presented her project on Monday, on the Romanov's (which I thought was a little far afield) I knew I had to go next. Opened up my poster board with great specimens, like Nessa eating, going to the bathroom, what I found on her closet floor, and a blurred pic of her mom in the shower (I had to be tasteful!). She cried in absolute joy and ran out of the room.

So, in sum, you can see a great project on Nessa can go a long way, take it from me!

Okay guys an update:

VANESSA CARLTON IS FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A HOLD OF.

Seriously, i've been emailing, myspacing, and between myself and my producer we've spent a fortune in transatlantic phone calls and eventually today got redirewcted to the UK.

The UK redirected us again and tomorrow morning a phone call to Universal music in the UK will decide wether we are doing this or not. It looks like we are going to have to go for another artist because Vanessa is really, really impossible to get. I'm devestated, I was so excited about doing a video for this song, but now...

Looks like it's not going to happen. My deadline from my producer was tomorrow, i cannot afford to wait any longer or it will jeprodize my project.

i took matters out of my producers hands and into my own to pursue this thing, looks like we have permission but probably wont be able to put it on youtube without reconsulting with Universal first.

Since im in the UK i had to go through Universal UK. Not sure about the US based protocol. I happened to be lucky and find a very helpful and good natured guy at Universal UK who was okay with it and sent through permission forms today.

We do not at this stage have youtube permish for when its done, but will try to get it and will let you guys know.

There's a lot of Vanessa videos on YouTube. I think it'll be fine if you put it up.

Part of being a producer and director is adhering to the rules the record labels set out of song use. Breaking them, especially with the labels explicit statement saying not to, usually results in legal action for students.

Labels pay a lot of attention to the content from student productions to ensure they aren't breaching copyrights.

I will definitely try to get it on youtube, but if the people at universal say no, then unfortunately theres not a lot we can do about it.

And in response to that last post - Yes, it's back on, we have full signed permission from Universal and Universal Motown to use the song in a student project.

I may be able to negotiate it under the terms of showing it to a fansite of carlton, but it will likely have to be pre-approved by the label.

I dont want you guys getting hyped up and thinking its going to be super expensive and professional! It should at least look nice and im spending a lot of time thinking about how to light it and planning it all out on paper, but we don't have expensive cameras or fancy equipment. We have the bare essentials and we are trying to do something quite ambitious with them.
