Carlton Prepping Tunes For Sophomore Album
« on: May 23, 2003, 06:57:11 pm »
LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton is about to hit the studio to record her sophomore A&M album, with an eye on an early 2004 release.

"I have to finish three songs, and I'd like to go into the studio with all the songs finished," she tells Billboard. The artist will co-produce the album with a number of collaborators, including A&M president Ron Fair, Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins, and possibly Jason Falkner.

"It's a way of bringing in tastes and sensibilities that I wouldn't normally be open to," she says.

Carlton says the new album will show the progression she has made from her first record, "Be Not Nobody," which has sold 1.3 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"I wrote some of those songs when I was very young. I know what I like in terms of sounds a bit more than I did then. The new music is very organic, sort of Beatles-like. The songs are very poignant, but they aren't girl diary lyrics anymore."

While prepping for the new album, Carlton also found time to record the theme song for the action/combat racing game "SpyHunter 2," which may also be turned into a feature film.

The artist also appeared as Dusty Springfield in the NBC series "American Dreams," and her cover of "Wishin' and Hopin"' is included on the show's Hip-O/Universal soundtrack album, released earlier this month.

At least that gives me a little hope that the damn Jenkins wont ruin the album completely.

I agree with vulture I'm glad ron fair is still producing because jenkins can't compare to him .As long as fair stays involved in the record I think it will have a better chance of being succesful .

Probably most. But not all. When an artist does them live like that, they get a feeling for crowd reaction...
We wont know for sure till we see the tracklisting.

Ex: MBdid several new live tunes over the past year or so. and about 90% of it made the new album tracklist. But there was a few that got left off. (Why the hell didnt she include "Fall"?!!)

Michelle has said that she wrote a lot of those songs ("fall" "standing on the edge" etc) on the road and played them at all her shows and she got sick of them... so she forgot about them for awhile and when it came time for her to do the record she had a bunch of new songs to put on it.

I haven't heard all the new songs... but of the few I've heard I like "papa" the most I think :)

Cool, well we will see what the next album will be like.  I don't like the beatles so much but I'm sure vc will kick some butt anywho.  The beatles are ok but not awesome in my opinion.  I mean the sound is cool but I don't really think it is the greatest.  But of course the beatles and vanessa are different artists so we will see when the next album comes out.  Keep up the great work vc.

I wonder if there are any classical influences in her life now and in what she likes as far a sound?  The great thing about ATM is the classical influence I think...  I know that it is not classical music but I still can feel the influence in it.

rock on vc

When I interviewed her last November, she said they were shooting for a late 2003/early 2004 release...I'm not surprised they're now saying the latter
