Holiday Help: New York
« on: August 01, 2003, 07:16:16 am »
Hey again everyone, i missed you all (i've been on holiday!). In about week i go to New York and i have a number of questions which i would really appreciate some help with:

1. Where's the best shopping? And how much do things on average cost- for instance a normal T-shirt- how much would that cost?

2. How hot is it usually? What is the weather like in general?

3. What the hell do you do if you're not 21!? I mean, can't you go and hang out in bars for an evening drink? Are there no places like pubs?   :?

4.Where the hell am i gonna meet all of you guys on the 10th!? We arrive at 12:30 so it would be just lovely to go for an evening meal with all of you- if the jet lag isn't slowly killing me!! PM me!

Thanks so much, love you all!!

Rosie :)

Old Navy is a big ugly chain. I'm sure there are cooler smaller stores in NYC that some of the locals can tell you about.

As for the Bar thing... well, usually you can get in before like 9 at any Bar/Pub/Grill if you are under.  but after 9 they are almost always 21+ only.  So sorry, Rosie.

As for a trick to get in, there are ways to sneak around a bouncer.... but not for a 16 year old.

I litteraly fly out of NYC 1 hour before you arrive Rosie.  Bummer.

You absoloute FOOL!

Oh and i think thats so silly with Bars! Mind you, i doubt we'll be able to overcome jetlag enough to even stay out beyond 9- lol. In the whole of Europe you can always get into bars (in france they barely have a drinking age- sorry ghis, LOL) and just have a casual drink- ugh how insulting!

P.S- i must go to a 'pub' just to get very angry, like i did at the fake disneyworld one. lol, perhaps i could take all of the NESSAholics and complain about how bad they are. You must all come to shite 'American Diners' here too!!

I'm totally bummed that I won't be able to see you...I'll be in Boston on the 10th. :P

The weather is supposed to be hot, humid, with the chance of occiasional thunderstorms.
I think you underestimate the level of my sneakiness

lol!

I had a friend of mine who just got back from Switzerland and he was telling me that all of the "american diners" seemed to have failed to read american history PAST the civil war.  He said they all server fried chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy and other very SOUTHERN food and had the confederate flag flying all over the place!  I live in the south and I NEVER see the confederate flag anywhere!

It's so hard to try and have "american" food, just like I'm sure its hard to do English or Spanish food, because we have VERY different foods and atmospheres depending on what part of the US you are in.  Southern US food is not at all like western or northern food.

In American Diners here we have hamburgers, milkshakes and women dressed up in really hideously stupid 50s skirts.

yeah, like 50s diners. My dad wants to go to one in New York, we are also going to Nantucket- its near Martha's Vineyard apparently?

So how much would you expect to pay for a normal t-shirt or sth?

Eh.  Depends on where you go and what is on it.  Normal touristy stuff in the cities I travel in are like 15 dollars.  But you figure everything in NYC is gonna be atleast 20% more expensive right off the top.  so figure between 15-20 bucks for an "i love new york" t-shirt.

I mean, i'm gonna be a tourist there myself.  I've been to a LOT of the big cities in the US, but this will be my first time In NYC.

Next up is San Francisco in late September!
