A: Because the Japanese language has no articles (a/an, the) the decision of whether to include them or not depends on the translator. Also, Japanese sounds are vowel-consonant pairings, so the word "ring" would sound like ringu. Again, transcription is at the whim of the translator. For the record, movie/poster art bears the title in Japanese script with the English tagline "the Ring.
