Vanessa Carlton Shows Sweetness and Sting
« on: January 02, 2004, 08:21:41 pm »
Taken from http://www.houstonchronicle.com:

Critics and the public seem mesmerized by singer-songwriter sirens hammering on pianos and creating epic melodies and angst-heavy lyrics to lure men to desirable doom.

Vanessa Carlton revels in that mode more than a little. The singer-pianist's blues and funk are rich and dark (Unsung, Prince). Sometimes there's too much sugar in her recipes, but there's nothing saccharine (or subtle) about her sinewy voice, the orchestral frenzy of her arrangements or the rhythmic whirlwind she conjures.

This emotional urban sandstorm, honed on Ordinary Day to Laura Nyro-like perfection, elevates the stark commentary of Sway and Wanted. Those complex classical-soul mélanges drip with piano pomp and melodramatic circumstance.

Grade: B

bah, only a B.

ew. I'm so ashamed to be from Houston at this point. The writing in that article was just AWFUL... Take that first run on sentence for example, read it out loud.   So bad. with all the cliches and friggin.. food references. was the writer hungry or what? "rich and dark" "sugar in her recipes" makes me crave some coffee and a cinnamon roll. No wonder we've been voted 2nd Fattest US City this year.  I wouldn't take it to heart.
Can someone please help me make an ad or banner for my sig. ?
