ok....sorry if this is not the place to ask:

i write songs. i only have lyrical melodies. how do i create a piano accompinaiant.(spelled wrong)....i always have trouble doing this. i want to create one that is easy to sing along with since i'm new at it. thanks

Study theory. Try to play by ear. Play lots of vocal accompaniment music. You do all that enough, you'll catch on eventually.

Your question is like asking how to paint. There is quite a bit to it.

Yeah, I've done all those things and I still just can't do it.
I can write lyrics but no melody.
I just think it's something you have,
Like being able to paint.
I mean,
I can't paint worth shyt.
Guess I should be thankful that I can play the piano at all, LOL.
But I'll keep trying...
Maybe it'll catch on one day, eh?

Playing in a jazz band helps, too. Most of the time, you have to make up  your part. You get a sheet with the melody line and chords above it. Doing that for awhile will help you learn how to turn raw chords into accompaniment. Then, all that is left is learning which chords fit with your melody line. Harmony... harmony... harmony... that is all there is to it.

don't force it, I know it sounds corny but if you are feeling a song it will come naturally than if you trying to get an accompaniment down because you desperately want one.
just play around, experiment, even the basic chords can make a song sound good if you put it together right.

Oh I know.
That's how writing lyrics is - it just comes naturally.
The music part though, doesn't.
We can't always get what we want I guess.

I merged the Swinder thread with this one and removed the back and forth discussion so it flows better. :)  -B

Hey thanks everyone for the comments on my clips.

Here is a complete version of "Papa". I'll warn you, it was recorded the other night after I had been playing for a little while so my fingers were starting to get tired. There's a couple mistakes but oh well. And it's not an easy song to play and sing so there's still lots of room for improvement!

Ms. Arwen, I've been playing for at least 24 years. Thanks for your comment.

Pyro, I don't play it the way you wrote it on the sheet music. I play it with fifths in each hand -- which seems to be Vanessa's favorite style. I'll give you a sheet sample when I have time to post it up. Tonight is the start of a very busy weekend for me. (PIANO RECITALS!!!)

Who's excited about the Harmonium book!?!?  8) Wahoo!! Who's already got it on order at their music store?!?

=Bea

could yew repost this?
