So i was talking with Todd and he was asking me if i was close to VMI - Virginia Military Institute.

I had no idea what or where this place was so i google it, go to the website and find where they are.  Of course, where they are is totally irrelevant to this topic.

What is the deal with them wearing the stap to their hat under their lower lip???  what is the purpose of this?

See example A:

I don't think it looks very impressive, in fact it looks rather silly.  I was hoping someone had some sort of answer for me as to why this is done in this fashion

I'm guessing it keeps their mouths shut, and is not worn under the chin as a precaution from the hat being used against them by way of strangulation.

personally, i think it's to add humor to the whole outfit.

i mean, standing in front of a queens house and not being allowed to talk all day must be boring. just watching them do it bores me. gotta get some laughs out of the whole thing somehow.

My NCIS guy went to VMI.

So did the two dudes from RW Seattle. Nathan and the one with two different color eyes. I forget his name right now.

It's simple.

Wearing a hat like that is I think an issue of ethics, they would have to demote me to the pits of hell and I still wouldn't wear the damn thing, so yeah, it's to test the endurance of us soldiers, if we win, we get knocked down in rank and all our pay cut, but if we lose, we look stupid, straight from the horses mouth folks, there you go!

*raises hand* I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW!!!

maybe it's beef jerky flavored and worn close to the mouth so when they get bored they have something to chew on!!!!

Things are going crazy and I'm not sure who to blame...

Haha, that actually doesn't sound too farfetched to me.  My marching band had hats with the straps like that, and while most of the band did put their straps under their chin, the percussion section actually put theirs in their mouths like a bridle bit!  I think a jerky-flavoured strap would be great! :D
