Working Age....

ok, so i'm kind of mad because it seems like, even if you are 16 there are no jobs out there for you, with the exception of fast food.

so i was thinking, 'ok, i'm turing 16 in april and i should get a summer job. hmm, i wonder where i could work'. so i'm thinking how about Border, Barnes and Noble, Guitar Center, the library, local pool, Khols, Gap, Famous Barr, etc. and i'm talking to people i know at school who have jobs, and i'm talking to them about these possible job ideas, and they say that, every store i listed above with the exception the local pool don't hire under 18! and i'm like "waaaa? i thought there was a huge demand now for teen workers" but my friends are saying employers want "more mature workers e.i. people 18 and older"

so i'm a little dissapointed that these types of stores don't hire under 18. i mean, i could work at the pool... but it seems like the same people work there every freak'n summer, and i doubt there will ever be an opening because the summer pool people come back from college to work there so arggggg.

and working in the food business is the last thing i want to do....

just thought i'd share how much this sux!

You want a job at 16?  You're not going to get a good one.  Fact of life.  Good jobs get taken by people who can work more (ie 40 hours a week) and who have more experience.

The only job I got offered at 16?  Restaurant.  The only job my brother's gotten offered at 16? Ice cream shop.

It's money.  Plain and simple.  Take what you can get, add it to your resume, get a better job next year.

hmm yeah, that's the impression i get. i even saw an article in the newspaper that said the only demand for teen workers is in the food business.

Main jobs in this area for those still in the school years are holiday retail, food services and during the summer: the amusement parks.  Seems to be about it, as noted above, unless you've got an 'in' somewhere for an internship, and then you're likely not paid.

tricia speaks the truth. i lucked out BIG time with my job at home. but even now i'm not going to have it when i go home for the summer - and it's looking like waitressing is my only hope. most people in my town get fast food jobs ... you gotta start somewhere, and unfortunately that's it.

If fast food doesn't appeal to you, try slow food.  Pizza Hut hires at 16, I know, because we had several 16- and 17-year-old servers.  If you can prove you're willing to work (and not socialize), you can get better hours and add up some tip money.  Except for mowing yards, though, I never looked for a job before I was 18 because I never wanted a lot of stuff that my allowance wouldn't cover.

i work as a cashier at a grocery store (named shaw's) on the weekends and got hired when i was a mere sixteen. :-) i've been there for almost two years now.  it is part of a union so we get pay raises every three months and the work isn't hard by any means.  my store encourages students to apply and is very flexible when it comes to working around school/extracurricular schedules.    

Though part-time jobs generally suck, this one is paying my way through college... for me, it was a good idea to start working at 16 and get a solid financial basis to put towards college tuition and room/board.  

though it sounds dorky, i really enjoy my job and the people with whom i work.  just thought i'd throw in my experiences to tell you that the food/restaurant industry is not your only choice.
unless you live in the middle of nowhere and have no grocery stores, in which case, you should probably go milk the cows so you have something to put on your homegrown wheat cereal. yes. :-)

lol. no, don't worry, i have about 4 grocery stores all 5 to 10 minutes away from my house. that's not a bad idea, i might look into grocery stores too.

yay i was a front end manager at a grocery store for three years. It was awesome,..If you get a job just lettem see how smart and sociable you are and you can get the bump up to CSS and it will pay like 50 cents more an hour.

amen to that pete. i'm climbing up the corporate ladder this summer, all the way to the service desk, which includes a nice dollar raise.
