Circuit City closing 19 stores!
« on: February 18, 2005, 08:51:04 am »
I'm sure many of you have already caught the story.  Apparently some of the markets where Circuit City has stores aren't strong enuff to support them, so they're going out of business.  That works out well for me because in less than an hour and a half, their going out of business sale starts and I already have picked out the DV camera I'm going to be pilng on to.

Yeah, I saw they were closing the only one relatively close to me, and thus I was sad. Although I am a Best Buy junkie myself, it is always nice to have some competition.  :?

I hadn't known.  Circuit City is another one of those things I've been in like only once.  Though there are more of them around here than Best Buys I think...

Pfft. Good riddance. That's what they get for trying to screw the customer all the time. Death to those who have those crappy mail-in rebates that never go through!

Oh yeah.. one more thing. Good riddance to consumer electronics. Everything these days is cheap and disposable. Our VCR broke recently and I can't even find schematics for the sucker. Who really cares, though? All these overseas corporations care about are immediate profits. To hell with long term prospects. But then again... it's not restricted to Asian companies. HP screwed itself over by closing R&D labs that were having a small slump after being immensly profitable for 40 or so years.

That so-called "sale" was a grave disappointment.  Almost all of their close-box merchandise had been trucked out to other stores and distribution centres and all that were left were displays, open-box, and incomplete items.  Fortunately, I found a digital video camera of the series I wanted at a decent value.  I had been looking at a Panasonic PV-GS9, but here I found a display model GS12, a step up in the series that also includes the 14 and 15.  Missing was the 1¼-hour battery, but included were the other accessories this model should come with (power cord, charger, hand strap, instruction manual, AV cable) as well as some items they tossed in are included only with the GS15 (IR remote control with battery, 8MB SD still image card).  Original price for the PV-GS12 is $399.  Their price (as it was) was $310 - not bad, considering that I bought a 2½-hour battery for $49 across town.  Go to other shops and add a couple of Mini DV cassettes for $11, a 1394 DV-to-PC cable for about $7, and a 100-count spindle of CD-Rs for $11.99 after rebate, and I have a complete studio for still less than the original price for the camera by itself.

My overall shopping experience at Circuit City wasn't mut's nuts, and the sales people were dodgy to say the least, but I believe I got what I wanted out of the deal.

Who cares? Circuit City was almost aways over priced compared to Best Buy, but then again, it was nowhere near the ripoff level of Media Play.

If it was something that I suspected Wal-Mart might have, I'd always go by there first anyway.
