fix my song?
« on: June 06, 2005, 01:19:53 am »
does anyone know how to clean up bad quality mp3s?

i have one of my solo piano songs recorded onto my computer via very nifty audio cables from my keyboard. only problem is that for some reason it also recorded  a weird noise along with it and i dont know how to get rid of it...

can anyone help?

Generally it's really hard to clean up tracks really well, requiring expensive equipment/software and good knowledge of signal theory. What's the noise like? Humming? Static? Pops? Hisses? Distortion? Some things are easier to clean than others.

The best bet would be to try and figure out what's causing the noise and rerecord it cleanly.

If that's not an option (or it was just a really awesome take), then I have seen some free tools online, but I've never had any worthwhile results with any that I've tried :-?

Sorry that isn't much help.

the noise is kind of hard to explain, its like, if you pressed record and the room was completely silent, it would record this kind of blank noise of nothing but you can still hear it... does that make any sense?

and im not sure how to record it differently because there really arent many options.. there are two cables that come from the keyboard into the microphone jack of the computer and i tried using only one and it does the same noise.

This might be your problem.

For signals below line level, like the output signal from a microphone or the pickups on an electric guitar, you need a preamp stage in your set up to boost the signals to line level before recording. The mic inputs on consumer soundcards have a built in preamp stage for this very purpose, but they're ultra crappy and only designed for those instant messenger headset mics, digital phones and such like. They're useless for music. Best avoided.

Does the soundcard in your PC have a line-in input? If the inputs are colour coded then it's probably the blue one, pink being the mic input and green being the line-out output. If they're not colour coded, then there's probably a symbol next to each jack socket (line-in looks like a circle of waves with an arrow pointing towards the centre, away from the centre is line-out).

Your keyboard probably outputs a line level signal. So try plugging it into the line-in input instead of the mic input. Hopefully that will eliminate the noise. My guitar outputs a below line level signal, so I need a seperate preamp stage between my guitar and line-in on my PC (I just use my regular amp, but a mixer would be best). But with a keyboard you should be okay just plugging in directly.

I hope that helps.

Edit: If that doesn't work, DjQuan is an audio genius. You could try dropping him a PM.
