female singer-song writers!

Ok... I need everyones help! For my Music Industry Analysis class we have to do a huge research project which counts as our final. It's like 1/3 of our grade! =O

I chose to write about how the singer-songwriting genre finally gave woman a true voice in music. Before the start of it (in the 60's/70's) there wasn't really anything like it, and it was hard for women to make a statement in music.

I'm going to start with musicians like Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King (the pioneers) and go all the way up to modern artists such as Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Tristan Prettyman, Anna Nalick and ofcourse Vanessa Carlton!

Since obviously if you're a Vanessa Carlton fan, you like this genre atleast a lil, I'm asking for all your help! Like I said, this project is huge and I could use any input! If you have any ideas of artists, situations, movements, etc, please let me know!

Thank you!!!  :D

Well honestly if you want to look at the roots of the current movement, you need to look at Michelle Branch. She was really the first of this crop of singer-songwriters. Sheryl and Alanis were there long before, obviously, but they were more alternative and didn't cultivate the huge group of chicks with guitars/pianos/whatever like Michelle did.

They're more rock though... Aren't they? Singer-songwriters are more soft-rock.

Oh. and Jophess mentioned Jewel! Thanks! =)

She used to babysit my next door neighbours! hehe. I wouldn't suggest putting that in, lol.

Tori Amos. she's an obvious. and as much as i'm not really a fan, Ani DiFranco and that whole angry-lesbian genre are very good exampls of female singer-songwriters who are outspoken in music.

oh yeah, if you include anyone, you MUST include Janis Joplin. she's one of a kind, really no one else has done what she has.

Definitely have to add Janis Joplin (my first thought)

and I think Lisa Loeb was probably a big inspiration to people like Michelle Branch and other young girls out today who play guitar...

Definitely Tori Amos! Maybe Fiona Apple (and the whole fiasco she went through with her new record could be interesting to go into detail about).
