Gangstarr ( Guru and DJ Premier )
« on: June 24, 2003, 05:46:44 pm »
I know that most of you here do not like hiphop but I had to make this thread because this is a group that I respect and love and is beyond musical boundaries...
Some of you here do listen to hiphop such as 50 cent, eminem, fabolous etc...but that is the commercial side of hiphop.  If you wanna know what REAL hiphop is about then you are looking at the right thread...for they are as real as they get.
First of all they are the Kings of Hiphop Longevity..
They have been around since the late 80's and this is their SEVENTH album!
They play no games and just hit with almost every track...
DJ Premier is one of the most prestigious Producers in hiphop today.
He has produced for almost all the great underground MC's and also producing classics For Nas, Biggie ,Jay Z and Yes even Limp Bizkit ( n2gether now )
Guru ( the MC ) has been working on Jazz projects as well as a Old school veteran MC that can hang with the new school MC's ...
They already have a massive Underground hiphop Following and their last LP went Gold ..
Gangstarr has Earned respect for hiphop listeners and hopefully you commerical hiphop listeners can give them a chance and learn what hiphop is supposed to sound like ... Ask Brian I made a Beliver out of him.
Warning :  This is not for the teenie pop music kids wanting the " girl i love you I have 20 inch rims I went to jail 10 times and I carry a nine" Rap music

Give then a Chance ....Their New album is called " The Owners"
some of my favs are " Mass appeal" " Above the clouds" " Work" "Dwyck"
" you know my Steez" and " Capture"

Seriously kids, Gang Starr is the hottest hip hop tandom out, period.

They have been at this game for so long and they keep improving with every album effort put forth, and that is not something you can say for many hip hop artists today.

And some of you guys know how I used to be with hip hop, all of that down south "We gon' get crunk and roll on 20's while smokin' a blunt" BS, but once I listened to Gang Starr and how underground hip hop is really supposed to be, it was over man lol. All of these guys who say they are hard and say they are underground are lying. I've even gotten some of my diehard commercial rap friends to embrace and respect Gang Starr for their talents.

Guru can rip it on the mic, and Premier's beats are some of the best in the business.

Like Danny said, if you want to learn what real hip hop is give The Ownerz a chance, it is an excellent CD, if I do say so myself.

They're amazing. "Moment of Truth" is one of my favorite CDs of all time.

If anyone checks them out and likes them, check out Guru's JazzMatazz stuff too :)

Proper rap music.

-Kev

P.S. I hated the Bald Head Slick stuff though :?

Yep, that's probably my favourite track on the CD too :)

Best lyric: "Actions have reactions, don't be quick to judge You may not know the hardships people don't speak of. It's best to step back, and observe with couth, for we all must meet our moment of truth"

[rant]
Can anybody imagine 50 cent or Ja "Murder Inc." Rule coming out with anything like that? Nah, only trend saturated rap music enjoys success these days. It's pretty sickening. Even more so than nu-metal. Genre by genre, real artforms are being pushed underground

Sorry [/rant]

Grrrr. I really want to listen to that album now but I can't find it anywhere.

-Kev

P.S. http://www.kev.nu/misc/fuck_hiphop.txt <--- An excellent article on the decline of hiphop (in the mainstream at least)

Edit: found it :)

I agree Kev...
hiphop is in big trouble right now and needs t focus it self on the fundamentals that it emerged itself after..
Yes some of the commerial stuff is good and we DO need it to lure some of the kids into listening and BUYING the real hiphop....
and some commerical hiphop is very innovative...but most of it is just redundant and annoying.
I model my music off of gangstarrs beats and philosophy , but more scientifical approach to my lyrics.
They have influenced me to a point where I cannot even explain...
serious guys give this group a chance...
even Rosie from the UK appreciates this group! Gangstarr WORLD WIDE!
Kev too man! where the US fans at? haha
You have nothing to lose!!

I don't know if any of the US people caught it, but Gang Starr was on Conan last night with Jadakiss performing "Rite Where U Stand" ... I only caught the last minute or so of the song, but it was still a good performance  :D

"The Ownerz," the first Virgin studio album since 1998 from veteran rap duo Gang Starr, arrives at No. 18 with 48,000 units. The group's last album, "Moment of Truth," debuted at No. 6 and has sold 472,000 copies to date.   :D

... I find it very sad that Three 6 Mafia, Da Unbreakables (Hypnotized Minds), sold 95,000 copies while GS only sold 48,000. Something seems wrong to me about that LOL
