Mt St Helens
« on: September 26, 2004, 09:29:34 pm »
Most the people on this board werent even born when it blew in May 1980 and covered the entire globe in ash. I was born a month later. lol

But I might have a front row seat at the encore.
---------------
Seismologists believe there's an increased likelihood of a hazardous event at Mount St. Helens due to recent changes in the mountain's seismic activity, and a notice of volcanic unrest was issued Sunday afternoon by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Initially, hundreds of tiny earthquakes that began Thursday morning had slowly declined through Saturday.

By Sunday, however, the swarm had changed to include more than 10 larger earthquakes of magnitude 2 to 2.8, the most in a 24-hour period since the last dome-building eruption in October 1986.

I was not only born but I remember it well. It put ash on the car's windshield even here in Los Angeles. Hope it doesn't cause too much destruction if it does happen again.

Alert Level Raised On St. Helens
VANCOUVER, WASH. - Mount St. Helens began rumbling more intensely Wednesday, prompting scientists to warn that a small or moderate eruption could come in the next few days.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2 to 2.5 were happening four times a minute, possibly weakening the lava dome in the crater of the 8,364-foot mountain, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Scientists said they are not expecting anything like the mountain's devastating eruption in 1980, which killed 57 people and coated towns 250 miles away with ash. But a small or moderate blast could coat an area three miles around the volcano's crater with ash, scientists said.

I remember seeing jars filled with ash also.  My brother came back with lots of it and described how it was like in seattle at the time(he was visiting relatives.)    I think he came back with lava rock too.  Don't worry Let, some of us are old too.
