Hola -- (Official Show Review)
If you didn't know, Vanessa was there with Third Eye Blind, she opened for them. The place sat 4500 people but was no where near filled up... i'm guessing maybe 2500 tops. I have some interesting comments about third eye blind, but i'll put them at the bottom of course.
Overall: Numerous comments about her "asscrack" showing. She wore the low cut jeans that she's worn before, and had the same problem before. She made the Navy dudes happy tho
"My underwear is showing!"... haha. The other guy that helps out is Ziggy, who helps Mark. I've always wondered his name. Piano/VC only show is VERY different then with the band. I missed pretty baby, and wanted. Her choice of set list amused me... no she floats either
. I was also hoping to hear SuperHero! oh well, dammit.
Set List: (I had it wrong above, i will edit Joe's post to correct it shortly... how could i forget twilight? wtf..)
C'Est La Vie - Same as usual but diff intro as no Ludvig or Pink Floyd music.
Papa - Same as usual, same daddy comments... which provoked someone to yell "Who's your daddy" at Vanessa throughout the show -- to which Stephen Jenkins had an interesting comeback when HE got on stage later...
Ordinary Day - Completely diff with piano only then i'm used to. Joe can confirm when he hears but there were some interesting keying going on in there.
Birdy (Birdie?) - when she was first signed there was an "A&R" guy. This guy had to like her tunes, or else her career wouldn't continue... so she felt like a "birdy"... she played this song and he got scared. cute story. She started it and forgot the first line... it was funny. She asked Mark then started again
Lyrics:
"I'm wrapped in the arms of a broken man, he asks are you ready... etc"
Wonder & Swirl wording are both in this song as well as "My Pretty"... this IS the song! "I can't get away cuz i'm just a bird in a cage"... that is why it is now called Birdy
. She has some absolutely beautiful riffs in this song, and the lyrics seem so incredibly meaningful.
Twilight - this is one of her first songs she ever wrote, kinda started her career... etc. no missed keys like London
Swindler - She got distracted during the beginning of Swindler, got distracted and stopped singing (due to the asscrack showing problems...) Her commentary and she kinda ducked down when she stopped was amusing.
A Thousand Miles - First said i can't swear, got distracted, then goes "This is a thousand f*ckin' miles"... no no it's a thousand miles *plays* hah. She's back to saying Migamaway instead of makin my way... dag nabit.
After Glow - This song was the highlight of my night. OMFG! I've NEVER heard this song before and well... i'm completely amazed. After this was done i sat there with this "in aww, amazed" feeling. Noted that she *just* finished this song and there would be parts that we had to just bare with her as she would figure it out as she goes. The melody for this song is something i've never heard from Vanessa. The lyrics IIRC were quite impressive as well. This could be another possible new favorite..
Stephen and band played a ton of new songs but mixed in their usual Jumper, etc popular songs. The got a ton of people standing at the edge of the stage and security didn't seem to care. By the end, Navy dudes were body surfing and such, very odd. During the middle of the show Stephen commented on how well Vanessa did and said... "I just want to clear one thing up... to the guy that was yelling 'Who's your daddy?' at Vanessa during her set... I'm her daddy... thank you." It was kinda funny at the time. Stephen also mentioned having an accident in the winter in SF while riding his motorcycle... it was a hit and run in an intersection and mentioned head injuries several times -- odd i hadn't heard anything about that eh?... a lot of their new music is inspired by the motorcycle accident i think... so let that be a hint about how good it is... heh.
I noticed that no matter what 3EB song was being played... they all sounded the same... that was annoying. And unless you KNOW the lyrics before hand (which 90% of what they played no one would cuz it's from the new album) you can't hear what the hell Stephen is actually saying when he sings. He also has this new obsession with screaming or something.
In conclusion (i thought i'd add that since it feels like i'm writing a paper)... i would have rather had 3EB open and Vanessa (and band) there to headline. VC could play some songs herself + Piano, and others with band
Hey -- What are the reprocussions of a non-military person wearing another military persons hat? Just curious -- if someone can tell me that, i have another story about the concert i'll respond with
Cheers!
