I did. but this is what I just saw he wrote under the video. I really don't like this guy.

Vanessa Carton has recently premiered the music video for "Carousel", the lead single from her upcoming studio album "Rabbits on the Run" to be released on June 21st via Razor & Tie Records - Pretty song, pretty video! I'm afraid though this is gonna flop hArd. She's gotta give us another 'A Thousand Miles" or "White Houses". You know, cute/mellow, piano-driven tunes, with a commercial edge.

Don't care for those comments either...
Way to misspell CARLTON.  My gosh...CARTON?  Of cigarettes?  Geez.
I understand what he means by the "commercial edge", but man, I think anyone can relate to Carousel.  It's a great concept, and no I will not make a smartass comment about getting off, ha ha.

I like it.  It's classic Vanessa.  That guy doesn't like it?  Too bad.  I do.

This sounds like a great way to promote the album, even get a little buzz going, if you'll pardon the pun!

i imagine the conversation went like this:

manager: Vanessa, how do you feel about opening for Five for Fighting??
Vanessa: Are you kidding me?? I LOVE them! Would be HONORED!
manager: then it's done!

i think some of you should stop freaking out. vanessa doesn't NEED more publicity. in case you haven't noticed, we live in a time where you don't have to be a superstar to be a successful musician. music isn't supposed to be about the money, or the fame, or who's opening or who's closing or anything like that. so many people on this site are so wrapped up in stuff that is seriously not important. I'm just annoyed by all this pointless ranting. Seriously, nessaholics have been making the same complaints for YEARS.

GET OVER IT ALREADY

I do have a point, which I have stated several times.  Vanessa DOES need more publicity, and deserves better.   She is amazing at what she does and should be rewarded for it.

I have NEVER accepted the BS that people aren't in it for the money.  That is some fairy tale crap dreamed up by a PR guy.  If you're not in it for the money, then play all your concerts for free and give away all your CD's or downloads.  Anyone who says they are not out there for some recognition for what they do is full of it. Why do it at all? Doing anything musically is a huge pain in the ass and costs money.  Even for little 'ol me, I decline certain gigs that don't pay a certain amount.  It takes a positive cash flow to be any kind of musician.....except down in the subway.  I'm not sure where you're getting your info from: people are DYING out here.

I'll agree with you on one thing: I know plenty of successful musicians who are not "superstars".  They are people happy to do studio work, tour, play weddings, give lessons, etc.  They are on millions of records, but they live in modest houses, waiting for the phone to ring.  Some of them are barely getting by in this economy.  That is the harsh reality of the biz.

Five For Fighting, in reality, does present an opportunity because they get play on the same radio stations that play ATM.
I'll just leave it at that.

Again, God Bless Razor & Tie.

No, I don't think Vanessa should be booking her own shows/tours...its hard for artists to manage everything themselves...but she's indie now...even though the major labels were treating her indie with Harmonium and H&T..its not a bad opening gig.  Its a good amount of people and someone said the "good" tickets are already sold.  She can't tour with Stevie forever.

I'd like to make a few things clear:  I am not criticizing Razor & Tie.  They are a credible operation and have my respect.
That is not because they might be reading this.

I think I will wait to see what is announced, tour-wise.

Are you saying that I was suggesting that Vanessa book a tour HERSELF or go on a solo tour?  I'm confused.  The first part doesn't really make sense.

A&M and The Inc. were not treating her indie.  They were "not making her a priority" or whatever the bean counters say these days.  In other words, they were ignoring her.

I think you guys are being a little rediculous.  Its not a tour as we know right now, and being that Five For Fighting have this one show listed on there tour page without tons of others, its most likely just a one-off.  I don't know what you guys think Vanessa is going to headline stadiums?  Let's be real, she hasn't had a hit single in 9 years..nost people have no idea that she has 3 records.  I think its important for Vanessa to open for artists at bigger shows to spread the word.  Of course she will do headlining gigs at smaller bars and clubs but who's going to attend those?  Majority are already fans...opening gigs are going to happen to an artist like V. Don't worry, I'm sure she'll do headlining gigs in major markets.

I think VC's powers that be are a little ridiculous.  There was no proper tour for H&T, no radio play in any major markets, nothing.  I expressed my concerns about the viability of The Inc. before H&T both here and elsewhere, and they were 100% legit.  Now I'm thinking that we might be looking at another exercise in ineptitude.  It's just frustrating.

Of course I don't think Vanessa can play large places.  I know this.  She is not a big draw.  But she has opened for much, much bigger artists in the past, and so I don't understand the philosophy.  When was Five For Fighting's last hit?  '05?  It's not like they're Bon Jovi.  The Goo Goo Dolls are touring, and are in fact playing the same venue in which I first saw Vanessa with them in '02(Jones Beach).  The opener is Michelle Branch.  I rest my case.  A local band can get a spot opening for band like FFF.

And opening acts routinely get crappy sound and short sets.  I'm not familiar with the Ravinia venue, either the size or stature, and it cannot hurt to play it.  But....there is just no substitute for her own, small club tour.  A couple hundred seats.  The right local promotion can and has done it.

It is already May.  Album's out in 7 weeks.  Is there a tour even in the works?  Anyone in touch with her management?  Is she doing radio?  Daytime talk shows?  Look, I'll gladly siddown and treat myself to a tall glass of stfu when things start happening, but someone show me where I'm off the mark.

VC deserves better, and as we have all seen her screwed, blued, and tattooed by the biz, it's painful to see things showing more signs of sucking.  I realize that even live shows have taken a hit due to the economy, but man, I just hope I'm wrong.

This seems like a one-off.  But the album will be out for a month by this date.

There's nothing else in place yet?  Jeepers.

I got a bad feeling about this.

I'm waiting until I see tour dates.

And she'll be playing the opening of an envelope probably.

Gee, what's Vertical Horizon doing these days?  They need an opener?

Sorry guys, I am getting pissed.

Vanessa is opening for..............Five for Fighting?

Uh. what?

This is ridiculous.  I'll bet you a million dollars that Meech got a better gig.

IF VANESSA'S MANAGEMENT CONSIDERS THIS REAL PROMOTION FOR THE ALBUM, THEN I SERIOUSLY URGE THEM TO RECONSIDER THEIR BUSINESS MODEL.

Who's she opening for next?  Shaggy?  Wtf?

It's a fundraiser.  My band played one for a different cause last fall where the tables went up to $20,000, and donations went up to half a million(!). A Hollywood A-lister was the host.  These aren't meant for the general public, nor is the music the central selling point.  Lots of people with more money than God.

And no, I am not one of them!

BNN will always have a special place.  I don't take to newer artists the way I used to.  Things changed majorly for me in 2001/2002, so to find VC was a blessing.  I'm a fan, but VC has this intangible something about her.  When Harmonium came out, I remember getting a "these are awesome songs; THIS is why I'm a fan" feeling.

Nine years, eh?  Nice to see so many people still along for the ride!

Looks like I'm in for the long haul.

Thanks for all that info Dan, I don't know a thing about recording music!
I too may have to get a vinyl player.  I don't have any of the albums on vinyl but I think I would like to.  It is a completely different sound than cd or cassette.

Yes, thanks, Dan. I was confused by the analogue thing, and whether it was better than digital or worse. :)

It's all opinion.  Both have their strengths and weaknesses.  It's all what you prefer.  I prefer analog sound but love working in Pro Tools.  But, as I've said before, things like drums, bass, and acoustic piano sound awesome on a good analog rig, so I am VERY psyched.

FWIW no less than Foo Fighters just did a whole album on tape.

I like the album cover!!

Got my tix in the mail today!  Very cool.  Did anyone else get theirs?

As strange as this sounds, I'd really like to see Razor & Tie people at the show.  They are more artist-oriented and so I wouldn't be surprised if they were there.  I would feel much better about their handling of VC, in any event.

I remember taking great delight in sitting in the Interscope section last time.  I was expecting a polite confrontation, only no one ever showed up!

No one showed up!?!?! That's a disgrace in my opinion.  Aren't label people supposed to be at artists shows or am I completely wrong on that front?

I guess they are supposed to, but I'd much rather they promoted the last 2 albums and done important things like make sure all area stores have stock of CD's as she comes through towns on tour.  This is obviously not as important as it used to be, but you get my drift.

@Let: the party is ALWAYS with me!  :)

I think we already got the complete tracklist. It isn't confirmed, but since management got onto us for posting the list when it was leaked, I assume it was real. "The Marching Line" is another one.

This is a very interesting article. I like the analogue thing, but I hope the whole album doesn't sound "cheap," since she said she was going back to her demon days (those songs definitely sounded cheap). And the instrumental for "In the End" is the "Tall Tales For Spring" instrumental slowed down? How ingenious... :)

We share the same concern =\ I hope the Carousel samples are low quality and not the real McCoy, does analog recording sound more tinny than normal recording?

I don't know whether it does or not, but I hope not.  :-\ Like that Doves guy said, no one records on that format anymore. Maybe there's a reason for that.  :-\

I think you get a whole different sound with the analog.  I think that is what she was going for.  I'm not sure she would do something "cheap" but if it sounds that way on the album then there is a creative reason for it.  I trust that it will sound JUST how she wants it to.  So if she wants me to hear it that way, then I embrace that completely.
I was interested about the In the End bit as well.
For me, BNN served it's purpose for me very well at the time.  There are only specific moods that I have to be in for me to go back to it.  I actually skip over ATM, OD, PB (because the version I have now is the new one) not because they are bad or I don't like them, but because they've been defiled by the general public. Lately I have been in that mood because the other two albums are too produced sounding for what I want these days, that is why I am so excited for this album because it seems like it will be really raw and mostly just V and the piano which I long for.  BNN has less percussion and involvement of other instruments not in the string family.
I KNOW you get a different sound with analog(in this case, it's 2" wide tape) because I've done tons of recording on 2" analog, and mixed down both to 1/2' wide analog tape as well as to digital formats.  The reason that people record to analog tape is that there is a certain warmth there that's missing from Pro Tools and Cubase and Nuendo, etc.  There's also no Autotune, no Beat Detective, no miraculous digital splicing, nothing.  No bullshit.  You can either play well or you can't.  And tape is several times more expensive than hard drives, so if anything digital is cheaper.  In terms of a tinny sound, digital is known more for that than analog.  Long story short, an album is recording, mixing, and mastering, and more often than it ought to, an overzealous engineer will master with a ton of high end and compression and really make an album sound like shite.  That is where "tinny" comes from 9 times out of 10.

So yes, people stay away from analog because it's expensive and much, much less flexible than digital.  AFAIK all of Vanessa's albums were ProTools recordings except for C'est La Vie and Papa, so this will be a departure.  It's exciting.

So.....do we have a complete head count yet?
