Nah, unless you really want to, there's no need. It's not a field I'm particularly well versed in either. Detailed debate has almost certainly been done better elsewhere. We could just look those up instead of arguing in here and derailing this thread more than I already have

The Bible is a complex work of which a thourough understanding requires specific expertise in multiple fields. As such, critics of The Bible do not deserve and should not expect the benefit of the doubt. They have to earn it.

 
I am not a theologian, and am not majoring in religious studies either.  So I may not have the authority in your eyes to critique the information found in the Bible.  But the opinions that I have expressed are those that have formed after years of being a practicing Roman Catholic, 8 years of Catholic school and all.  I've examined my faith thoughtfully over time and have decided that love and compassion should be the basis of our existence in this world.    

What revisions? By who? And how do those revisions degrade the authenticity of the verses regarding homosexuality?

What is in the Bible has been decided by Papal councils hundreds of years ago.  They've decided what gospels are legit and what aren't.  I can't give specifics because I haven't studied the Bible at length, but the books are out there, the History channel specials are out there.  I'd love to study more on the subject.  I'd have to talk to you about it at some later time.  
 

I don't necessarily expect any answers to those questions. I just wanted to make the point that those who make statements about The Bible (or anything sufficiently complex) without substantiation aren't stating anything more than a blind opinion. Which is fine, but carries no weight in a debate.

Although, for different reasons, I agree with you about love, tolerance and being slow to judge people (homosexual or otherwise) If you don't know what the higher power has decided, then how do you know that he/she/it approves of love and tolerance and disapproves of hasty judgment? Are you not making decisions on his/her/it's behalf? By placing the decisions into the hands of an unknowable higher power you've removed any standard of morality all together.

I know that the higher power approves of love because it is what makes the world go round.  I'm sure you would say that's blind faith, but there has to be something to that belief if there are world religions that share that belief in peace and love.  There's something to be said about positivity and love.  It is what keeps us healthy and happy.  It's good energy.  And we should practice this love, not because we fear something bad will happen to us if we don't, but because we care about others.  Along with that, I feel that love is all inclusive.  I don't think a positive and good creator would encourage the exclusion of others.

:!: You are so detached.  I agree that we should leave these decisions to a higher power, and the Higher Power has made the decision.  I'm just following it.

That's the thing though, I feel (and it's only my personal belief) that no one knows for sure what the higher power has decided.  Therefore, we cannot make decisions on his/her behalf.  Instead, we should just love one another, be tolerant of differences, and not be hasty to judge others.

Haha, Nicole and I went to see this and dragged along her younger brother who had wanted to see Freddy vs. Jason instead.

My take on this film?

Young, hot French girls with rockin' bodies like to sleep with UGLY French men that are old and perverted.

SERIOUSLY! too much titty! and the guys EWW haha remember the corny guy with the boner in the speedo! That's my fave part!

Haha, that was a classic moment!  I was like, what's that thing in his swimsuit?  I honestly had no idea at the time.  Damn, when did we see that movie?  Geez, you'd think it was 2 years ago.

But another great part was when the author got naked for the old gardener and we saw her muff which was totally ungroomed.  (Yikes!)  Is that the best irony or what?

okay....but what about the story?  who was Julie really?  and who was Julia at the end?  and what was with that finaly scene where Sarah is waving to Julia, then waving to Julie?

Okayokayokay, I'll be serious for a second.

I was definitely scratching my head at the end and wondering what really happened and what was simply made up in the author's head.  It's been over a year since I've seen this film so I may have forgotten key details, but that whole time that she was in France could have been imagined, and she needed the inspiration of the French country side to be able to write a different kind of book than she usually does.

Love and compassion, that's what we should all be about, not taking away the rights of others.  We should leave all the judgements and conclusions about what should and shouldn't be to the higher, divine power; and not try to interpret what's in a really old book and has been revised loads of times by different people.

And hey know what? The beach volleyball games look cool! There's music and lots of peeps...Ah I wanna be there to watch them live. Looks like a good party! lol

Agreed!  They play fun, up-tempo music between serves and the matches are super entertaining.  It's like tennis in the sand.  It takes a lot of good split-second decision making and strategy to win games.

Remember in Sydney the american girl gymnast that broke her ankle when she landed after
the jumpy apparatus, but didn't clutch until she bowed and did the doby thingy with her arms
(you know how the gymnasts do the dooby ... pose, turn pose to show they "stuck" the jump?)
then she collapsed from pain ...

That was the cutest description ever.

I am glad Svetlana made the silver to end her career and could be happy about it. I mean Carly
is like almost 10 years younger than her.

Gymnast Khorkina Says 'Judges Robbed Me'

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Svetlana Khorkina, who was second to American Carly Patterson in the women's all-round gymnastics competition, has accused the judges of robbing her of the gold medal and said "everything was decided in advance."

"I'm just furious," Khorkina, who had been favorite for the coveted title, was quoted as saying in the daily Izvestia. "I knew well in advance, even before I stepped on the stage for my first event, that I was going to lose."

"Everything was decided in advance. I had no illusions about this when the judges gave me 9.462 for the vault after conferring with one another at length.

"I practically did everything right, still they just set me up and fleeced me," she said in the interview published on Saturday.

Asked why she felt she was marked down by the judges, Khorkina said: "You better ask them. I think it's because I'm from Russia, not from America!"

When Khorkina won her silver medal on Thursday, she showed no outward signs of disappointment and said: "I think it's the best day of my life."

The Russian was also favorite for the all-round title four years ago in Sydney, where her hopes were dashed after she crashed to her knees from the vault. It was later discovered the horse had been set five centimeters too short.

She said she was hoping Sydney's experience would cause the judges to be more sympathetic to her plight in Athens -- her third and last Olympics.

Khorkina did not think Patterson was a deserving winner.

Asked if the American was a worthy opponent, she said: "I've seen a much tougher opposition than her. Let's see how long she can remain on top. Can she keep going and compete in two more Olympics like myself."

"No, well, you better write that Patterson is a great champion and she has a great future," she added sarcastically.

Khorkina confirmed that Athens were her last Olympics but she wants to remain in the sport.

"I'd like to work for the International Gymnastics Federation. These competitions have shown the sport needs a lot of changes," she said. "It should be judged primarily on grace, elegance and beauty rather than simply on mechanic tumbling."

On Sunday the Russian will compete in her last event -- the uneven bars, where she is hoping to become the first gymnast in history to win three consecutive Olympic titles on the same apparatus.

So Svetlana didn't even medal on the uneven bars, which are her specialty, because she messed up on a skill and came off the bar.  The skill is even named after her 'cause she invented it!  Can we say karma?


OMG, the Women's 20km Race Walk is live on TV!

Has anyone ever seen this sport before?  I saw a race once in Central Park.  It really mystifies me.  I wanna laugh, but can't.  These women are so in shape - it's crazy.  How on earth do you get your stomach to look like that from walking?  

The commentator just said that race walkers walk like 4 hours a day to train for these races.  I guess that answers my question.

How do you become a faster walker anyway?  ::scratches head::

I can't knock the sport though, 'cause Spain got a Silver in the Men's 20km Race Walk, so Nerea's got to be thrilled.   :lol:

The music choices made by the NBC production staff are hilarious.  Whenever they go into and come out of commercials they have been playing music "relating" to the race walking!  I've already heard Walk This Way and that other song that goes "Ain't nothing gonna break my stride.  Ain't nothing gonna slow me down.  Oh no.  I got to keep on movin...'"

Feeling totally out of the Billie loop, and in an effort to enlighten my American self, I have been trying to see that video you all have been referring to and I have still been unable to view it.  The link hasn't been working and I can't seem to get it off that site.   :cry:

My curiosity must be satiated!  I must find out who Billie Piper is and why she is so big in the UK and Argentina, apparently.   :x
