Essentially it is rock music where people whine and cry and try to act all hard like they are better than everyone else because they are not "preps" ... I suppose I'm not the best person to explain it since I don't like it, but that is what the majority of emo seems to be in a nutshell

R&B

But only in it's current popular form. I quite like the old R&B stuff, before the genre was hi-jacked by wailing women who only write songs about how much they hate men.

Emo. Yes, it has beaten out country. Simple Plan and Good Charlotte have annoyed me to levels not seen since Ja Rule was on the radio 247 times a day back in 2000 LOL.

*twitch*

I hate music by Simple Plan and Good Charlotte

NO!

And Emo TOTALLY isn't your definition! :( This is really STRESSIN' me out. Emo is like .  . . Emo(tional) - Dashboard Confessional! Something Corporate! (In a sense) All-American Rejects! We love ALL these people, and HATE the Adult Contemporary Good Charlotte; however, we love our French (Canadian) friends Simple Plan - Pierre Bouvier! We should just love him because of his name! PS Emo doesn't usually get heavy airplay. :\

Its a tie between rock or metal.

I HATE it. I see absoloutely no skill in it at all- how much talent does screaming into a mic take? Absoloutely none in my opinion. Its for whiny little pricks who think they're going through some awful 'teenage angst' and that maybe someone screaming can help them out. They then proceed to claim they're better than you and pass judgement on every other music type as if rock is the King of all music styles and condemn you for not wearing a hoodie- i really don't get it!

:D Metal. Exact reason why I hate it, Rosie. It's my second least favourite. I mean, Slipknot - *makes a face that shows I'm confused that I make ALL the time, but none of you have ever seen* What is that? Half their lyrics don't make sense, and the other half are just BAD so I'm guessing to redeem themselves from the queerness of their lyrics, they scream to sound like hard-asses? Not to mention the only musical talent they've got is their (scary) drummer, so I'm really wondering how they're making a living. People actually listen to this stuff? It's quite sad.

For me it's a tie between Rap/Hip Hop, R&B and metal.

I have always disliked every form of rap, never ever liked it, but lately there are a few songs here and there I am starting to like, which doesn't mean I like the genre any more than I did before, I just like very specific songs. Also, I don't understand why it is everyone is trying to be go all "ghetto" these days, adding a rapper to their songs or even rapping themselves! C'mon, even Mariah Carey joined the "Put a rapper in your life" campaign! Sad. Truly sad...

R&B/Soul
I dislike HipHop but R&B is actually much worse.
Anything that contains Beyonce or Ashanti!

I have to agree with BV on that. Don't get it. I do like a few songs here and there too, same as with rap or hip hop, but I sometimes wonder if I end up liking them because they're everywhere and I know them by heart without even trying or because of the song itself really.

As for metal, well, sounds pretty much like noise to me. I haven't really tried to listen to it, mainly cos I'd get a headache after a 10 or 15 secs.

Ouch. Just noise indeed. Allow me to defend the greatest genre of all.

You're describing Nu-metal (Linkin' Park, Papa Roach, Korn, Disturbed, Limp Biskit, etc.). You're complaints are all warranted, but Nu-metal isn't metal. It's another genre hi-jack in an attempt to market angry music to kids. Actually Papa roaches first single wasn't too bad, but that's because they stole the riff from Iron Maiden.

Proper metal contains plenty of skill. To hit drums on time or play to a keyboard/guitar solo on time at speeds over 200 bpm takes mastery of the instrument. Lot's of metal singers are classically trained vocalists because to sing operatically or to pull off a proper metal scream takes mastery of the voice. The style may be brutal and not to everybody's taste, but real heavy metal makes high demands in technical musicianship (Probably second only to Classical, and maybe Jazz).

So there :-P

I hate Slipknot too, but Mick (their lead guitarist) is sensational. Still two good musicians out of 9 isn't that great :-\

They make money because the media presents them as the most extreme thing around.

I still see NO skill in screaming like that- when we meet again i shall scream as a greeting, and then you can clap at my 'mastery of the voice'. hehe. I accept your point on most of that but do you really think its comparable to Classical music!? Hmmmm. I think you are mistaken.

Haha, I'll look forward to it. If your greeting sounds anything like this proper metal scream, then I'll definitely be impressed (and probably slightly deafened). It's undeniable that to pull of a scream like that takes skill (which is why Nu-metal singers sound terrible when they try).

Yes I do think it's comparable to classical. In fact, a lot of metal is neo-classical in it's instrumental parts. Check out the following solos. If you take away the drums and the overdriven guitar effect, then you'd get a classical peice which could have come from any of the classical greats :)

Cacophony - Burn The Ground

Okay, so you probably couldn't care less, but I'm just doing my bit to prevent the tarring of proper-metal with the Nu-metal brush.

I knew the "noise" would hurt ya Kev ... *pats kev* ;-) there there mate ... it's ok :-)

No No! It's true! Kev's right ... (both of them... Ashani and Beyonce is bbbbbaaaaaaadddd ... hhhm i never realised that bad was such a symetrical word ... bbbaaaddd though bbboooddd is more symetrical! I like symetry ... and balance ... Anyway,)
In all honesty, out of all the recent shit music i've been listening too, all this new age pop wannabe rock, strumming away at their rhythm guitars away ... you really have to appreciate all the talent that goes in to hard heavy rock.
It's mostly all built on very old technical classical styles ... like Kevin says it's not the nu-metal that is out now ... those four chord wonders ...  that basically loop their stuff ... the classic classic rock is awefully hard to play ... instrumentally speaking ... the drummer will have a double bass, and he'll be there kicking both his feet while beating at every other bongy drum thingy he can reach with his stick!!!! Basically his sitting on his butt with his arms and legs flailing!!! And tempo is amazingly fast ... not just any person whose been learning an instrumnet for couples years as most recent arists have been can do that ... and to nail the riffs the guitarists play, at that speed! It's the speed that kills me ... and pieces are often are original and inspired as well!!! They move around on a fretboard like no other ... to play a chord is easy ... but to have a long very long solo lead ... you must understand the intricate details behind the music ... the scales how they fit together and the majors and minors blah blah blah very technical stuff I never understood ... just like the classics ... which move around based mostly on keys and scales ... because there is one instrumnet leading in an orchestra. .. same thing if one guitar leading a band ...
I gotta agree the Maiden does really rock, and they hardly scream ;-)
though once they start screaming *ahem* singing, yeah it bites then ...
I reckon it needs to have at least one long lead guitar riff to be considered "heavy metal" ...
nu-metal sucks.

I bet $50 Rosie so won't scream when you all meet ;-)
I'm willing to pay the $50 too ;-)

THANK YOU! i was thinking the same thing! :-P NEVER put Good Charlotte OR Simple Plan in the emo catagory......THEY"RE NOT EMO! sorry, something that just frustrates me....emo really is good music, and like cece said, doesn't get much airplay. people like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are pop music groups that people like to call emo. they're more punk pop if anything. and they suck (imo).

If you want emo, then i guess the most popular emo band is Taking Back Sunday. (and i happen to be wearing their tshirt now :-P ) They've been playing with Blink 182 at a few shows with The Used ( a cross between emo and alternative with a hint of grunge) - you will find they are nothing like Good Charlotte/Simple Plan/etc.

as for my least favorite kind of music - hands down Country
