What do you do when there's a CD you really want?

This is a big issue for the music industry, and the consumer.

For example, if you enjoy Vanessa Carlton's music, but don't buy a CD (or dowload legally), you are essentially cheating Vanessa.

However, if you don't have a lot of money to buy CD's, prices are often seen as too high, and it seems like the record companies and stores are asking for people to dowload illegally, or just burn CD's off their friends.

I have lost jobs at four different CD and DVD retail stores, for the sole reason that there is not enough work to go around. I am very good at the work I do. Hours keep getting cut because companies' profits are down significantly.

This issue affects everyone.

I have to say though, that with bootlegged live recordings, (most of my favourite VC tracks are of this variety!) I believe that while it is not actually legal for these recordings to be made in the first place (although I must say that I am very glad they were!), seeing that they do exist, they should be shared freely. I say this because, if they were not, bootleggers would burn CD's and sell them, making money off Nessa's talent, without her getting a cent. I've seen it on eBay. These people are not entitled to make money from selling songs/recordings that they do not own any rights to. There are more issues though...

Foshizzle. If it's an actual album or EP then I'll buy it legally. I like having all of the artwork and such. If it's a song that's live or such and there's nowhere else you can get it, then I'll download it.

If I know about it before it comes out, I try to get it at Best Buy on release day so it's a decent price.  If not, I usually wait for BMG Music Service to get it so I can get it as one of my "free" CDs (that I actually have to pay $3.04 shipping & handling for).

If its a cd i really want, and have been waiting for then I go out and buy it from Best Buy. If not I download a particular song off of bear share.

If it is someone I really like, I'll buy it. Even if my friend sends me the CD and then I like it, eventually I'll go buy it.

I generally do condone getting imports from other countries (eg: Australia, Canada) from friends ('cause as much as I  Brooke Fraser I sure as hell wasn't going to pay like $40 to import the CD... I waited until I could get it for $10 ) and being able to get random tracks from people if I like an artist, but in general if I really like the CD or the artist I will buy it.
For all you broken hearted lovers lost, go find another one. 'Cause you know time won't wait and you'll be late, white rabbits on the run...

I like to buy original cds, but it becomes really expensive, so I only do it when I'm a fan.

For artists like Vanessa, Joss, Norah or any other artist that I really like I will ALWAYS buy the album. I usually burn a copy of the original to take around with me so I don't have to worry about the wear and tear to the CD.
