S&M... Symphony and Metallica (check out the dvd/cd, it's astounding...)

Back to the topic, I think this tour with Stevie Nicks will do a lot for her career. This may be what she needs to make a comeback, because lots of people who may not have known of her before (apart from A Thousand Miles) will now pay attention to her, and seek out her music, and hopefully then the record company will get its ass in gear and promote Vanessa

I haven't read all the posts... so forgive me if someone has already expressed this... but people seem to be taking this way too seriously... eg. the lyrical suggestions... were SUPPOSED to be crap, which is why they were funny... if they were serious suggestions, it wouldn't be funny to watch... come on, 'my first time, riding a bike... that would explain the blood'!? its so stupid it's funny

Yeah, it was at a concert in Nashville (I downloaded a recording), she introduces She Floats by saying (i've edited out some 'um's:

"so um, I wrote a song about a dead girl... it's about a ghost, really... I used to think that a little girl lived in my closet, and she used to haunt me, and I kinda wrote this song about her. And it was kinda like, this feeling like if I died, sometimes people don't know that they're dead... I know that's really annoying and new-age.... so, she kind of has a secret... and the other way of looking at it is that she has this secret, and everyone thinks she's alive, but she's actually dead... freaky yes, I know... this song is called 'She Floats', and it's about a little girl who wears mary-janes and is possibly dead"  8O hehe

not Delta Goodrem!!! They are a world apart- in Vanessa's favour, of course.

Some of my own music is somewhat Vanessa-like. It's kind of like Vanessa Carlton crossed with Metallica!!! (piano and heavy guitars!) I am recording soon, if anyone wants to her it, pm me.  :D

I don't think this is a very good list either. I don't think it is really possible to compile a list. Everyone has different tastes. I mean, Mariah Carey has a teriffic range, but I don't like the way she uses her voice. That is my opinion. I think Kate Bush should be on the list too. I much prefer Vanessa and her style of singing to someone like Mariah, personally, even though she has a lot of fans and success with her style.

I am glad that Jenny Berggren made it onto the list though.

I like it that Vanessa is not afraid to write about death. It's a very natural topic for artists to explore. We are fascinated by it because it is the unknown.

I think Vanessa said at a concert that She Floats is about a ghost she saw when she was a little girl.

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / VC Song Interpretations
« on: March 14, 2006, 09:20:03 pm »
Dark Carnival is a tricky one to interpret. This may not be Vanessa's meaning when she wrote it, but I personally think that in the song, V is singing about a guy she likes, who is in love (or lust) with another girl. This girl is really bad for him, like a vampire   (metaphorically speaking), she has a hold of him ("...bringing you to your knees", "she wants wht is hers before the light"). This is hurting the narrator (V or whoever's perspective she is singing from), as shown in the lyrics: "Bring me a remedy".
"Should never have looked so close... I can see all your cracks"- she really thought she could love this person, but now she has seen his weakness, his fatal flaw, and regrets having ever have seen it...

Does anyone agree?   :?:

General Vanessa Carlton Discussion / Are you inspired....
« on: March 14, 2006, 05:45:23 pm »
Yes, definitely. I sometimes write lyrics but can't figure out the music, or the other way round. I am usually working on a million songs at once, lol. As for Vanessa being an inspiration, she is a main influence of mine, apart from Metallica. Metallica and V both inspire me so much but at the same time I feel discouraged because I compare everything I have written to their music. I hold them in such high esteem that I find it hard to be proud of anything I have written. A wonderful thing about V is how she writes about so many different topics- think of Morning Sting, Annie, Half A Week Before the Winter, All is Well, etc. I think a very important thing to remember when writing a song is that nobody else has the ability to express things the exact way that you can. I hope this is helpful to somebody.  :)
